Peek-a-boa! 👀 S’mores the Kenyan sand boa is showing off her favorite hunting tactic—ambush mode! These little snakes are masters of disguise, spending most of their time buried beneath the sand with just their eyes and snout exposed. When unsuspecting prey like rodents or lizards pass by, they strike with lightning speed, dragging their meal beneath the surface.

Kenyan sand boas are nonvenomous constrictors, and their stealthy, low-energy hunting style is perfectly suited for the hot, arid environments of East Africa. Efficient and adorable? We think yes. 🧡🐍

It’s getting hot hot hot 🔥
Yup, the AC in the farmhouse is still down, so check-in might come with a little light sauna experience 😅 But don’t worry — our new building is nice and cool with plenty of AC and cold water, and that’s where all our animal interactions will be happening for now!

We’re open all day as usual and Marley can’t wait to see ya 👀✨

Y’all know we love our libraries — and we had an awesome time this week visiting the Washington County and Tyrrell County Libraries (and Bertie too!)!

Big thanks to everyone who came out to see us. We had a blast sharing our reptiles with you and getting to talk all things scaly, slithery, and cool. It’s always fun to meet folks who are just as excited about these animals as we are.

We really appreciate the library teams for making these visits happen — it’s always great to be part of community events that bring learning to life in fun and hands-on ways.

Hope to see y’all again soon!

We’ll be making the rounds at libraries throughout the region this summer—so keep an eye out, we might be popping up at a branch near you! 🦎📚✨

Neo is showing off one of the coolest features of pit vipers—those heat-sensing pits just in front of his eyes! 🔥👀 These specialized organs allow him to detect the body heat of prey, even in total darkness. Think of it like built-in night vision!

Come meet Neo and the rest of our scaly squad at Lizard Land! It’s Saturday, which means we’ve got a feeding show today at 2:00 PM and another one tomorrow at 1:00 PM—don’t miss it!

🦎 For our friends in Chesapeake and the Outer Banks, we’re just a short drive away!

Say hello to Chomper, our alligator snapping turtle and full-time swamp monster 🐢💥 With a spiked shell, beak-like jaws, and a tongue that looks like a worm (yep, that’s how she lures in fish!), Chomper is basically a living fossil.

While she lives with us here at Lizard Land, alligator snapping turtles aren’t native to this area. Their natural range includes the slow-moving rivers, swamps, and bayous of the southeastern United States, especially throughout the Mississippi River Basin. You won’t find them wild in the Outer Banks — Chomper is just here on extended vacation 😎

Come by and check her out — but trust us, you don’t want to be on the wrong side of that bite!
