We get asked all the time if we can tell our smooth-fronted caimans, Winnie and Lunchmeat, apart. 🐊 And while most people probably can’t at first glance… we can!

Tiny details give it away—Lunchmeat has a smaller head, Winnie’s eyes are darker, and one of them even came to us missing a toe on their front foot. But that’s just the physical stuff. Personality-wise? They’re completely different! Spend enough time with them and you start noticing the little things that make each one unique—just like with people. 💚

We’re closed today, but we’ll be back for the week starting tomorrow at 11am! Come by from 11–5 and hang out with your favorite scaly friends! 🦎🐍

🕷 Not our usual shed, but a very cool one nonetheless! This beauty is our Mexican redknee tarantula’s latest molt — that’s what we call it when a tarantula sheds its exoskeleton.

Tarantulas molt their old exoskeletons to grow, and it’s a big process! They’ll flip onto their back, split the old shell, and slowly wiggle out — leaving behind a near-perfect replica of themselves, fangs and all. It’s an exhausting and vulnerable time for them, but it’s the only way they can get bigger (and repair any damage).

This lovely lady was donated to us 5 years ago and has shed multiple times in that span. Her last molt was over a year ago, so this is an exciting milestone!

One of 17 spicy babies here! 🐍🔥 This little False Water Cobra (Hydrodynastes gigas) is part of our second-generation clutch here at Lizard Land.

False Water Cobras are famous for their unique “hooding” display—flattening their necks and upper bodies wide along the ground to appear larger and more intimidating. Unlike true cobras that hood up vertically, these guys go for a dramatic ground-level bluff.

And don’t underestimate them—these snakes grow BIG! Adults can reach 6 to 8 feet long, making them one of the largest colubrid species in the world.

Look at those scales! 🧐 Can you guess which reptile here they belong to?

Reptile scales come in all shapes and textures. Some species, like certain geckos, have tiny, smooth scales that feel like velvet. Others, like snakes, have overlapping scales that create a sleek, armored look. Then there are keeled scales—like the ones in this photo!

Keeled scales have a raised ridge running down the center, giving them a rougher texture. This little keel helps break up light reflection, offering extra camouflage in the wild. You’ll find keeled scales on many lizards, snakes, and even crocodilians.

🪲💙 Meet the blue death-feigning beetles! We currently have 11 of these powdery little tanks on display, and they’re as tough as they are dramatic.

🔹 These desert-dwelling beetles get their powdery blue color from a waxy coating that protects them from the harsh sun in their native Southwest U.S. and Northern Mexico.

🔹 When threatened, they play dead—flipping onto their backs and going totally limp until danger passes. (Hence the name!)

🔹 They’re nearly indestructible—some of the longest-lived beetles in captivity, with lifespans that can reach up to 8 years!

🔹 Despite looking like something from another planet, they’re super gentle, slow-moving, and surprisingly social.

Come see our little beetle crew in action—and maybe catch one mid-drama queen moment. We’re open 11–5, and last paid admissions are at 4pm!

🎉 We have a super special birthday in the house — Wally the black and white tegu turned 13 this month! 🦎🎂

Wally, one of our very first lizard ambassadors, came to us in 2017 after some less-than-ideal care. He arrived with a few burns and a reputation for being a bit grouchy — but he’s come a long way! These days, he’s still thriving, getting around just fine (though maybe a little slower than he used to 😉).

Be sure to wish him a happy birthday next time you see him!

🎟️ We’ll be open tomorrow from 10 AM to 5 PM — last paid admissions at 4 PM sharp!

Come celebrate with us and say hey to the birthday boy!
