We can never understand how anyone can abandon their beloved pet to fend for themselves, but it happens all too often. It happened to Nova Star when her owners moved and left her behind. Neighbors fed her, thinking she might be pregnant because her stomach was so distended, but the truth was far more serious.
She was infested with heartworms and suffering from heart failure. As we took Nova Star in, we immediately took her to UGA veterinarians to be examined. They discovered she had one of the worst cases of heartworm disease they had ever seen 💔 She was diagnosed with right-sided congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, and ascites (fluid building up in her abdomen due to heart issues). If we didn't rescue her, she wouldn't be here today.
To save her, vets removed the fluid from her abdomen, gave her medications to support her heart and kidneys, and provided oxygen to help her breathe - all costly, but crucial. After starting heartworm treatment in foster care, she returned to UGA for a follow-up and showed incredible improvement.
Her heart is still enlarged, a likely consequence of the severity of her heartworm disease, but she is stable, safe, and healing in a foster home. Nova Star has another appointment in three weeks and we hope she will soon be healthy enough for adoption!
Heartworm disease is common in the Southeast, and sadly, many organizations don't have the resources to provide this level of care - leaving HW+ dogs at a high risk for euthanasia. Nova Star is just one example of pets in crises that we save everyday. With your support, we can continue to provide second chances to those who need it.
Your GAgives Day gift allows us to save homeless animals who are suffering. Now through December 2nd, we are raising money to save dogs like Nova Star - will you help us reach our $200,000 goal?
