November 18th is recognized as FIP Awareness Day! 🐱 FIP stands for Feline Infectious Peritonitis, which is a viral disease that was once a death sentence for cats, but thanks to advances in veterinary care and compassionate support, many kitties are now surviving this heartbreaking illness, including the adoptable kitties you see above!

Furkids is proud to be one of the only rescue organizations in the Southeast that intentionally rescues and treats FIP+ cats! We wrote a new blog that outlines our commitment to treating cats with FIP - read more at furkids.org/blog/fighting-fip-a-story-of-hope-healing-at-furkids.

We can never understand how anyone can abandon their beloved pet to fend for themselves, but it happens all too often. It happened to Nova Star when her owners moved and left her behind. Neighbors fed her, thinking she might be pregnant because her stomach was so distended, but the truth was far more serious.

She was infested with heartworms and suffering from heart failure. As we took Nova Star in, we immediately took her to UGA veterinarians to be examined. They discovered she had one of the worst cases of heartworm disease they had ever seen 💔 She was diagnosed with right-sided congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, and ascites (fluid building up in her abdomen due to heart issues). If we didn't rescue her, she wouldn't be here today.

To save her, vets removed the fluid from her abdomen, gave her medications to support her heart and kidneys, and provided oxygen to help her breathe - all costly, but crucial. After starting heartworm treatment in foster care, she returned to UGA for a follow-up and showed incredible improvement.

Her heart is still enlarged, a likely consequence of the severity of her heartworm disease, but she is stable, safe, and healing in a foster home. Nova Star has another appointment in three weeks and we hope she will soon be healthy enough for adoption!

Heartworm disease is common in the Southeast, and sadly, many organizations don't have the resources to provide this level of care - leaving HW+ dogs at a high risk for euthanasia. Nova Star is just one example of pets in crises that we save everyday. With your support, we can continue to provide second chances to those who need it.

Your GAgives Day gift allows us to save homeless animals who are suffering. Now through December 2nd, we are raising money to save dogs like Nova Star - will you help us reach our $200,000 goal?

Whitney is a sweet girl who is waiting to shine in a forever home 💜🏡 She came to Furkids from an overcrowded shelter back in March with her puppies, and has watched all of her puppies find their forever homes. Now, it's Whitney's turn!

Whitney can be shy around new people and will take time and patience to build a relationship with you. But once she does, she will be a loyal and affectionate companion. She is a smart cookie that already knows some commands and will thrive in a structured environment with experienced parents.

Whitney is social with other dogs and enjoys the company of high-energy dogs, but would do best in a home without cats. She is stressed by the loud shelter environment, so we think she would do best in a more quiet home without very small children.

A foster-to-adopt option is available for Whitney to give you the chance to get to know one another before making it official. Whitney is about 4 years old and weighs 55 pounds. If you'd like to meet her in person, please fill out an adoption survey at www.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/FKDS/Dog!

We stopped by our brand new Johns Creek Adoption Center to see how our kitties are doing, and it's safe to say they're loving their new digs! 🧡 We are so excited to have this new facility!

🏡 If you'd like to adopt one of the kitties in this video, please fill out an adoption survey at www.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/FKDS/Cat and our team will get in touch to set up an in person meeting at our Johns Creek Adoption Center (9850 Nesbit Ferry Road in Johns Creek, GA).

From saving lives to celebrating forever homes, this week reminded us why we do what we do. 🫶 Here’s a look back at the highlights from Furkids!

🐱 70 cats and kittens received affordable spay/neuter surgeries and vaccines this weekend at our low-cost clinic, all thanks to our amazing partners at Fix Georgia Pets, who sponsored this event! Together, we’re tackling pet overpopulation in Georgia, one surgery at a time.
🧡 We've been taking more animals than ever before! Just this past week, we've taken in almost 40 new animals to the Furkids program. Help us finish this year strong by donating to our GA Gives fundraising campaign at gagives.org/organization/furkids!
🚌 After last month’s tragic accident, our transport van is back on the road - and 49 kittens are now safe in Vermont, ready for their next chapter. Huge thanks to our driver Mike, our hardworking team, and our partner shelters for making this lifesaving trip happen.
🐾 Our tails are wagging with joy over all the amazing adoptions this week! Nothing makes us happier than watching our animals head home with their forever families. Happy tails to all!
🍂 The past two weeks at the Furkids headquarters have brought some gorgeous views - the leaves are changing and we've been been enjoying these gorgeous fall colors.

Thanks for tuning in! We'll be back again next Friday with more updates ✨

There are an overwhelming number of animals in Georgia that need saving. Animals like Zippy who arrived at Furkids injured and suffering at just three weeks of age. Furkids is on a mission right now to raise $200,000 to fund our lifesaving efforts because of the great need in our community. Please donate today and your gift will be matched. Animals like Zippy are counting on all of us to save them.

When Zippy arrived at Furkids, he was just three weeks old and in terrible pain. He’d come from an overcrowded animal control facility, and his tiny leg was severely injured - degloved and necrotic (photo blurred above). Zippy needed amputation, but he didn’t weigh enough to perform surgery safely.

Now through December 2nd, your Ga Gives Day donation will be matched up to $10,000, doubling your impact for pets like Zippy. Please help us reach our goal - every donation helps save another life! Donate now at gagives.org/organization/Furkids

After months of care, Zippy finally gained enough weight and strength for surgery - No longer needing to endure the pain of an unhealable wound. He recovered beautifully and learned how to get around on three legs with his foster. Once healed, Zippy went to one of our PetSmart adoption centers, and it didn’t take long for his family to come around!

On adoption day, Zippy curled up in his new mothers arms for 45 minutes, purring and giving nose kisses the whole time. Today, he’s healthy, happy, and home - because of supporters like you. All hope was not lost for Zippy. Together, we saved him.

This week marked a powerful milestone for the Furkids team - our first TransFUR since last month's tragic van accident. ❤️🚐

On Monday morning, our staff came together to vet, prep, and carefully load 49 precious kittens for their long journey to Vermont, where many already have adopters waiting to welcome them home. These transports are truly lifesaving, giving animals from the South the chance to find their forever homes up North, where the pet overpopulation crisis isn't as dire.

We're proud to share that this TransFUR was a success. Our hearts are full of gratitude to our incredible driver, Mike, who bravely made this trip again after all he's been through. To our dedicated staff and volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure every kitten was safe, healthy, and comfortable. To our northern shelter partners, The Humane Society of Chittenden County & North Country Animal League, for opening their arms and helping us save more lives. And to you, our supporters, for lifting us up with love and encouragement and making our lifesaving work possible with your financial support!
