🐾 Patient Spotlight: Go, Team Grove! 💦

We had a special group of visitors at Homestead this morning: eight dogs from the Grove family came in for their health checks before heading to Madison, Wisconsin, for the DockDogs World Championship!

Most of the crew will be competing, and we love the story behind these amazing athletes. Each one was rescued and given the chance to channel their energy into a sport they love. ❤️

Lily and Raven were jazzed to show off their jumps and excited spins during their visit! 🐕🐕

We’re so excited to cheer them on as they make a splash at the championship! Please join us in wishing the entire Grove family safe travels and a fantastic competition.

🐾 It’s Veterinary Technician Appreciation Week!

From gathering vital signs and evaluating patients to running laboratory tests, performing dental cleanings, taking X-rays, monitoring anesthesia, and providing nursing care, veterinary technicians bring skill and dedication to every stage of a pet’s care.

🦷 What Lies Beneath: The Importance of Dental Radiographs

Meet Ginger, our sweet little terrier who is with us for a routine dental cleaning, also known as a Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment (COHAT).

During her initial oral examination, Ginger had some visible dental calculus (tartar), but otherwise, her teeth appeared relatively normal.

However, what we can see above the gumline doesn't always tell the whole story.

📸 Take a look at Ginger's dental radiographs. Can you identify the abnormality?

As her X-rays revealed, Ginger had a fractured tooth root hidden beneath the gumline that required surgical extraction. Without dental radiographs, this problem could have easily gone undetected.

Why are dental X-rays so important?

Approximately 60% of a tooth's structure lies beneath the gumline, where it cannot be evaluated by visual examination alone. Dental radiographs allow us to identify problems such as fractured or retained roots, bone loss, tooth resorption, and other abnormalities that may cause pain or infection.

At Homestead Animal Hospital, full-mouth dental radiographs are included in every dental COHAT. They are an essential part of providing thorough dental care, allowing us to identify and address problems that might otherwise be missed.

Ginger's case is a great reminder that even teeth that look relatively healthy can have significant disease hiding beneath the surface.

This adorable little Boston Terrier came in for her spay surgery today and left sporting the sweetest accessory — a sprinkle-covered donut! 🍩🌈

Who knew post-surgery recovery could look this cute?! 🥰

🦟 A mosquito got into the clinic today… and we let him stay. 😄

Meet Mosquito, the cutest little Chihuahua who came in for his annual wellness check-up!

He is officially the only mosquito we’re happy to see at Homestead. The flying kind can transmit heartworm disease and other illnesses, so we much prefer ours tiny, four-legged, and wearing a collar. Thankfully, this Mosquito came bearing nothing but big ears, a cute face, and plenty of personality. 🐶🐾💛

Annual wellness exams, routine bloodwork, heartworm testing, and year-round prevention all help us keep little guys like Mosquito healthy.
