🚨 COURTESY POST: TEMPORARY FOSTER NEEDED

Please note: This is a courtesy post. Preston is not currently in the care of Northshore Humane Society.

We are sharing this on behalf of Tania, who is currently in Florida and doing everything she can from afar to help a friend in an incredibly difficult situation. Her friend was working in the New Orleans area when he unexpectedly ended up in the hospital, leaving no one locally to care for his dog, Preston.

Preston is currently at St. Tammany Parish Animal Services, and they are urgently looking for a temporary foster who can pick him up and care for him while his owner recovers.

Please read Tania's full message below and contact her or Brian directly if you can help:

"Hello, I am not sure if this is the proper group for this but I am in a time crunch and need to try.
I have a friend that was recently working near the New Orleans area but is now hospitalized and his baby (pictured) is being held at a shelter since he has no family/friends there as of yet. He needs to be picked up by Tuesday will be entered into the shelter system to be adopted out 😞 Hopefully our friend is discharged by next week, but we would love to have a back up in case he is not.
I’m wondering if any wonderful caring volunteer is willing to pick up and foster Preston while my friend recovers and can pick him up? And if for any reason it becomes too long of a stay, then we can make other arrangements at that time. We, myself and Brian, another mutual friend, live in Tampa FL and wouldn’t be able to pick him up ourselves. I just don’t want this baby to go into the system when he is my friends loving companion. I hope we can find someone and work this out.
Thank you for your time.

Yesterday, we found a tiny, starving puppy hiding underneath our admin building.

One of our staff members noticed the shelter dogs were unusually interested in the building. Later, he saw two little eyes staring back at him from underneath. At first, he thought it was a raccoon.

It wasn’t.

Cowering underneath was a severely emaciated puppy, absolutely terrified.

Our team came running. For nearly 10 minutes, staff worked to reach her as she growled and screamed out of pure fear. But the second they finally pulled her to safety, her little tail started wagging like crazy.

We named her Pollywog.

She’s only 8 months old and is battling severe emaciation, an upper respiratory infection, intestinal parasites and demodex. Her little body has been through so much.

But last night, instead of hiding underneath a building, Pollywog slept in a warm bed with a full belly, blankets and people who already love her. And somehow, after everything, all she wants to do is give kisses.

We don’t know where she came from or how she found us. Maybe she was just looking for somewhere to hide.

Or maybe, somehow, she found exactly where she needed to be.

Pollywog is safe now, but she has a lot of healing ahead. If you can help with her care and the care of animals just like her, please consider donating.

UPDATE: FOSTER FOUND!! APPLICATIONS CLOSED!!

🚨 FOSTER NEEDED FOR GUS! 🐾💙

Sweet Gus is a 3-year-old Dachshund who was recently surrendered to our care, and understandably, he’s feeling a little unsure about this big change in his life.

Gus was very loved, and saying goodbye to him was not an easy decision for his owner. Sometimes life changes in ways we never expect, and surrendering Gus was simply the right choice for their family.

Now, we’d love to get this sweet boy out of the shelter and into a quiet, loving foster home where he can decompress and feel safe again. ❤️

Gus is a sweet boy who can be a little nervous at first. We’re told he does well with children and can be shy around other animals, but with a little patience and time to warm up, he settles in.

Can you give Gus a soft place to land while he waits for his next chapter?

Even if you can’t foster, please SHARE to help us find the perfect temporary home for Gus! 🐾

🚨 FRIDGE NEEDED! 🚨

Well... our shelter fridge has officially called it quits. 😩 And this fridge does a lot more than hold staff lunches!

Every day, we rely on it to store:

🥪 Food and drinks for our hardworking staff

We're hoping someone in our amazing community may have a working refrigerator they would be willing to donate to Northshore Humane Society! It doesn't have to be fancy or new. It just needs to be clean, dependable and ready to work. ❤️

If you have one you'd like to donate, please reach out to [email protected] or our COO, Ronnie Sanchez, at [email protected].

Alone in the marsh, cold, starving, and forgotten… that’s how Valkyrie’s story began.

At just 2 years old, this beautiful girl was found fending for herself in a marsh, fighting to survive against all odds. No dog should ever have to experience that kind of loneliness.

Yet somehow, Valkyrie never lost her gentle spirit or her love for people.

Now that she’s safe, Valkyrie is showing everyone exactly who she is—and she is pure sunshine! This sweet girl is an absolute lovebug who would choose pets, cuddles, and kisses over any toy you could offer her. Walk into the yard and be prepared for a very enthusiastic welcome, complete with her signature major butt-tuck zoomies! She races around with pure joy, as if she’s been waiting all day just to see you.

Valkyrie knows some basic commands and is eager to please. She is extremely sweet, affectionate, and loves kids. However, Valkyrie is not good with cats, so she would do best in a cat-free home where she can be the center of attention.

After surviving alone in the marsh, Valkyrie is finally ready for the life she has always deserved—a warm home, a loving family, endless cuddles, plenty of zoomies, and the second chance she never stopped hoping for.

Valkyrie survived on her own. Now it’s her turn to be someone’s beloved family member. ❤️🐾

🐾❤️ HAPPY NATIONAL DOG DAY! ❤️🐾

Today, we celebrate the dogs who fill our homes with love, cover our clothes in fur, steal our spots on the couch and somehow make even the hardest days a little brighter.

But at Northshore Humane Society, today also belongs to the dogs who are still waiting.

The ones who arrived scared, hungry, injured or abandoned. The ones learning what it feels like to be safe again. The ones who press their noses against their kennel doors hoping the next person walking by might finally be their person.

Every single day, your support gives them that chance. Because of you, homeless dogs — and cats! — in our community have a safe place to land, medical care when they're hurting, full bellies, warm beds and people who will love them until a family of their own comes along. ❤️

On National Dog Day, we simply want to say thank you. Thank you for every adoption, foster, donation, share, volunteer hour and kind word. We truly could not do this work without the incredible community standing behind us.

And if you'd like to celebrate today by helping an animal in need, donate in whichever way feels most meaningful to you. 🐾 Whether that's helping with everyday care, giving toward lifesaving medical treatment or helping us build a better future for the homeless animals who will need us for generations to come — every gift makes a difference.

🎉THAT’S A WRAP ON COMMUNITY PAW-TECTION!

What. A. Day.

Today, our incredible veterinary team saw 138 patients during Day Two of our Community Paw-tection Annual Exam Special! Add that to the 103 pets we saw last Wednesday, and that brings us to an AMAZING…

👏 241 COMMUNITY PETS CARED FOR IN JUST TWO DAYS! 👏

That’s 241 pets who received affordable annual exams, vaccines and prevention to help keep them healthy, protected and at home with the families who love them. 🐶🐱

We are beyond happy to be able to provide something like this for our community. Seeing just how many families took advantage of this special reminds us exactly why accessible veterinary care matters — and we hope to continue finding ways to help even more pets in the future.

A HUGE thank you to our sponsors and supporters - Elanco Merck Animal Health Vetoquinol Pets USA Nutramax Laboratories Midwest Veterinary Supply, Inc. and Purina!! Your support helped us protect hundreds of local pets!

And finally, the BIGGEST thank you to our AMAZING veterinary team. 🩺💙 Our doctors, technicians, assistants and staff worked incredibly hard to make sure every pet received the care they needed, and we could not be prouder of them.
