A humorous look at how dogs handle property rights. This is not to be taken seriously, but it is still strangely accurate. Have a good chuckle! I do, however, conclude with how this actually works.

Hiring a dog trainer can be a daunting task. You are confronted with many certifications you have never heard of and have no idea what they mean. You can search online but are those ratings meaningful? Are their reviews genuine? It can be hard to know what to look for. And then, all kinds of groups and well-meaning people have lots of opinions on what you should do. None of that makes it easier. This article gives you some pointers on how to make that search more successful.

Fever in dogs can get serious quickly. It’s good to know what to monitor and what first-aid steps you can take.

The average temperature in dogs is 100.5° to 102.5° Fahrenheit (38.06° – 39.17° Celsius), compared to 97.6° to 99.6° Fahrenheit for humans. This means your dog may feel feverish to you even when its temperature is entirely normal. A better indicator is a dog’s nose. It should be wet and cool. If the nose is not cool, something is wrong.

Unfortunately, far too many dog trainers fail to understand the ethological meaning of dominance, submission, and aggression and misuse them. If this topic interests you more, I highly recommend the books by ethologist, Roger Abrantes and animal behavior expert Temple Grandin. Dominance and submission are terms ethology defines, not dog trainers. To explain these, we have to examine their origin briefly. This starts with a brief look at the dog’s ancestors.

In this episode, we discuss canine consent. It is the idea that dogs are sentient beings who deserve agency. According to this concept, dogs should be allowed to make their own decisions and not made to do anything they don’t want to. Let's examine that.

How dog trainers view dogs has changed over time, and so has our approach to dog training. Dog training used to be very harsh—today, it’s much kinder. Some even argued that dogs don’t have emotions—these days, we know better.

We take a comprehensive view, including the current understanding of genetics, evolutionary psychology, and dogs’ emotional systems. In addition, we aim to honor them and acknowledge their amazing complexity. As a result, we understand how dogs are similar to humans and how they are different. Old models of training are getting a fresh look. I am sure we will continue to learn more in years to come.

Are dog parks safe? Dog parks can be fun for dogs and people. You can bring your dog to these fenced areas to socialize and play off-leash games. Play with other dogs, or whatever else you and your furry companion might enjoy doing. Dog parks are a great way to add some variety to your dog’s routine. It helps with their biological fulfillment, and results in a happier dog.

However, most of us have probably seen how one single, misbehaved, hyper-active, or simply very pushy dog can change the entire atmosphere at a dog park in an instant; creating a not-so-safe environment. Whoever brought that dog in usually earns nasty looks from the other dog owners but more importantly, it turns what should be a fun time for people and their dogs into a stressful situation for everyone involved. That dog park is no longer safe.

Let’s review a couple of simple tips on how you can do your part to ensure that dog parks are fun for everyone and remain as safe as possible for all people and dogs.

Dogs absolutely must be vaccinated against Rabies, Distemper, and Parvo. But do you need annual boosters? How long does each shot actually protect your dog? What about the many other dog vaccines? Do you need them all? Is it case-by-case? Area-, health- or age-dependent? There is much to know. Overvaccinations aren't harmless, and more isn't necessarily better.
