There was a time when Rosie would prefer death over letting me trim her nails.
So if youāre struggling with something similar believe me. I understand.
As you can see till this day she doesnāt love it.
The truth as I learned it was devastating to me.
The truth being that my own dog didnāt trust me enough to cut her nails was like a dagger in the gut.
So for months & months we worked little by little to get to the point where we are now.
Which I know still isnāt as graceful as weād prefer it š
But we get it done now with relative ease.
When it was at its worst I just made it my mission to slowly & incrementally improve little by little.
Iād massage her paws when she was sleepy just to desensitize her to touch.
Then Iād just clip literally one nail at a time. Clipā¦then let her flight.
Then clip two then let her flight.
Iād also pay her some food after each individual clip.
Then little by little, I would start asking more of her. For example, when she would flight I would just hold her and not let her flight.
This process on repeat over & over for a good long while.
It didnāt happen overnight. Not by any stretch of the imagination.
For most dogs getting the nails clipped is like going to the dentist for us. You donāt like it, you may never like it, but itās just something that has to happen.
If you donāt consistently cut the pups nails the quick will get extremely long and then you wonāt even be able to have short nails anymore.
But at the time we started working on this, that was the least of my concerns. I just wanted my dog to trust me.
All this to say to whoever is watching this & silently knowing they struggle with thisā¦
I promise you. If itās possible for Rosie & Iā¦.its possible for you too.
