Meet the critters - Dolly

Dolly is a Scottish Highland heifer. A heifer is what you call young female cattle before they have their first calf. She may be getting the title of cow this summer. Be watching for birth announcements.

Dolly is a sweet and mellow girl. She is a little shy compared to her best buddy, Dorothy. It is one of the ways to tell the highland girls apart. She spends a good long time thinking about coming near to say hello and get scratches or treats. She definitely warms up once she make friends. Her humans, Dayis and her daughter Sam, get the quickest responses out of her. She knows she’ll get lots of love from them. A brush in your hand or a little treat can get her attention if you’re looking to make friends. She will still take her sweat time getting up and wandering over, but it’s worth the wait.

Dolly looks so much like Dorothy. It makes things tricky from a distance. Now that Dolly’s coat has grown in the best way to tell is the bangs. Dolly’s hang down straight to her nose, Dorthy has a wild cowlick right in the middle of her face causing her bangs to never lay straight.

Dolly likes hanging with her herd. She especially likes hanging out with the calves. She spent a lot of last year being the designated babysitter to Slider, Marbles calf. Marble even left this years four day old calf with the highland girls most of the day on Saturday, just popping over to feed her when she was hungry.

Come and visit Dolly at the farm. She’ll be hanging out with Dorothy waiting for treats and scratches (right behind the horns is the favorite spot).

Had to get a photo of this adorable little kid while it’s ears were still floppy. They’ll pop up in a few days.

We don’t get floppy ears very often, it’s usually been the runty one of a triplet or quadruplet bunch around here. A crowded womb and not quite as much nutrients as the bigger kids. This little one is strong and healthy and is the most energetic of the trio so far. He was escaping the pen already while mom was busy birthing the other two!
