Happy fall y'all 🍂

This time of year we can start our days in the 40s and 50s and be sweating by noon. With coats getting longer in preparation for winter, some horses benefit from being clipped. Whether you're showing, casually riding, or loving on your retired friend, every horse deserves to look and feel great.

How clean is your horse? 🤔

Having a down to the skin clean horse is essential for a smooth, efficient clip. While it is (usually) possible to clip a dirty horse, it's hard on my equipment and makes the clip take so much longer.

In a perfect world, every horse would be impeccably clean down to the skin. However, sometimes a bath isn't practical, possible, or even fair to the horse, especially as we move closer to winter.

It's my goal in the next few months to put together educational posts and videos on how to properly bathe your horse in preparation for clipping and provide alternatives for when a bath isn't possible.

These two handsome little guys made me proud ❤️

Ike, the first pony, had a rough life before his current home and was incredibly nervous about clipping and a sensitive soul. For both of our benefit, he's been sedated for many of our clips.

Charlie, the second pony, is young and not so sure about this whole clipping business and was also sedated for his first clip.

But both ponies this time were great without sedation.

It's so rewarding when horses and ponies realize clipping is ok. When they just let you clip their ears without fuss, or don't panic about their legs.

Sedation can be necessary for some horses and ponies no matter how much you work with them, and that's fine too, but being able to get to the point where they take a deep breath and realize the weird buzzing thing isn't going to eat them is such a great feeling.

Did you know horses grow their coats based on daylight hours? So even though we're still having warm days, our four legged friends are feeling the effects of shorter days.

Other factors for coat length and density include age, nutrition, breed, and health issues such as Cushing's.

It was such a joy and privilege to meet the people and ponies at Home At Last Farm Mini Horse & Donkey Rescue. To see so many horses, minis, and donkeys well in to their 30s at such good weight is a testament to the care for and devotion to their animals.

Some of their residents are available for adoption, including Cheddar and his donkey companion Macaroni. They also need volunteers, foster homes, and donations. I look forward to working with them in the future and watching their mission touch people's hearts like it did mine. Maybe someday a donkey (or two) can join my family.
