🐱 Ever wonder why some male cats have those BIG chunky cheeks?
Those adorable chubby faces actually have a lot to do with hormones!
Intact adult male cats can develop thickened cheeks, often called tomcat jowls, as they mature. Testosterone contributes to that classic broad, chunky tomcat face.
And there’s a reason that extra padding can come in handy. 👀
Unneutered males are more likely to roam, compete for mates, and get into fights with other cats. Those thick cheeks can offer some protection around the face during confrontations. 🐱🥊
And this is another reason getting male cats neutered is so important! ✂️💛
Neutering lowers testosterone, which can reduce hormone-driven behaviors like roaming and fighting. Less fighting means fewer bites, abscesses, wounds, and other injuries — especially for community cats living outdoors.
As testosterone levels decrease after neutering, those big tomcat cheeks may also gradually become less prominent, although some guys keep a little of that signature chunky-cheek look. 😻
