Cyrus Snifferbaum, Chief Investigative Correspondent, Suspicious Odors & Backyard Crime, reporting live from the scene, where I have detected an extremely suspicious smell. Authorities have cordoned off the area. I have sniffed the evidence, the witnesses, and three completely uninvolved dogs. The investigation is ongoing.

In this case, the suspicious smell is simply a new disinfectant scent. Which brought up the question of shelter/rescue standards of care and the infamous "Fifteen Minutes". I wanted to delve a little more into that and what that meant, exactly.

Fifteen minutes is the minimum amount of time required to provide only the basic care for each animal based on The Association of Shelter Veterinarians (ASV) Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters.

To be completely clear, tho - that fifteen minutes estimates only six minutes for feeding and watering; and nine minutes for p**p scooping, cleaning bowls, and disinfecting kennels - per each individual animal. And, considering Thad, well... c'mon, man.

With twenty-two of us in gen-pop, that's simply not possible to do all that in just fifteen minutes. Not to do it right, anyway. Especially not if Mama A is watching, haha. To do it correctly it's a MINIMUM of one full-time person. Not to mention those darn pigs and goats and all their shenanigans.

But, back to the best part of the refuge - US (the dogs). Most people think that if the refuge has open kennels then more dogs can be rescued. But that's just not true. If not enough staff is available to provide the - ahem - way underestimated 'minimum' fifteen minutes per animal, then humane care is unable to be provided. That's the last thing anyone wants. I mean, I don't know about you guys, but I'd rather have MORE attention; not less...

All that above being said, none of that includes our fantabulous PLAY TIME or socialization or even BATH time or vet visits. Not to mention baking treats or equipment maintenance, lawn care, paying bills, giving us treats, social media, giving us more treats, caring for our every need., Think about that for a minute …

So, like Papa K says, with the refuge, while several kennels might be empty—it's not that there's no room. There's simply not enough time/manpower or funding to maintain/hire additional manpower. The PitCrew accomplishes an amazing amount of work and good—but they can only stretch themselves so far. While they never WANTED to say no—they just eventually had to. They had to for us...for the ones that were already here. The PitCrew will be here - day in and day out - for each of us, FOREVER. They are here for good.

We hope that you will be, too.
Not just for fifteen minutes.

Cici Pawsworth, Senior Correspondent, Human Accountability & Domestic Affairs, reporting live from the kitchen, where I have confirmed that dinner is late. By exactly four minutes. I have described the delay as “unacceptable,” “disrespectful,” and “a complete failure of leadership.”

Speaking of unacceptable, disrespectful and a complete failure of leadership, I wanted to share that FOURTEEN years ago Shaw PBR released their very FIRST shirt design to the world. "Hate Pit Bulls? That's Okay... That's pretty much the same way I feel about you, too!"

Of course, they did receive a little bit of flack about that, but hey - par for the course, right? I mean, if it hit home and you did hate pit bulls, well... but, that's okay, right?! Since then, Shaw PBR has released many many shirt designs and several have poked a few bears, but again, they're okay with that. I mean, us dogs don't care what's on the shirts - we just care that the PitCrew is here doing what they need to do for us. That's what matters.

Right now, three different shirt designs are still in stock, ready to be shipped out to anyone that wants to wear the rescue mission. One features ME, beautiful Cici. I might not have been here when this first shirt was released, but I have been here since 2013 - and am the longest resident still here. And, just like the PitCrew, I'm "Here for Good" - which is our second available design.

Mugsy is actually older than me, but hasn't been here quite as long, so it's his gangster face on the sugar skull shirt. Funny side fact is that we're both in line for wheelchairs. I have mine, although it isn't too comfortable for me since I have zero cartilage in my back legs and they are bowed out so much in the back that it doesn't fit so well, and Mugsy is a little too wide to use mine, so he'll need one a size bigger. He's strong as an ox in the front, but his back half - well, he's criss-cross hoss.

Anyway - back to the shirts - that's the story behind them. There's a reason, there's a story, and we love it when you love them and share our story and mission.

Check out all our available shirts at shawpbr.org or if you're not interested in fashion, consider making a if you can! 🙂

DOG FOOD MATTERS
A LOT

Especially when most of our Adopt-a-Bulls arrived malnourished and neglected, not knowing where their next meal was coming from.

We don't want them to ever have to worry about that again. Do you?
A full bag of Fromm Adult Gold is just $48 at Four Season's Farm & Garden here in Columbus. It's super easy - just give them a call at 662.329.2281 and tell them it's for Shaw PBR. They'll handle the rest.

Can't afford a full bag? That's ok, too! Just click the link below and what you can - it ALL helps. Because DOG FOOD MATTERS. YOU MATTER.

Che-Lau Barkingham, Senior Foreign Correspondent of International Sniffing Affairs, reporting live from the south side of the yard:

I have just discovered a smell that I describe as “deeply concerning.” Officials have been unable to identify the odor. I have sniffed it approximately 38 times and I am refusing to rule out criminal activity.

In the meantime, Papa K has been able to - at least temporarily - diffuse the situation and get me to focus on my report for the day: Sponsorship for the Triple T's - Thaddeus, Thelma and Tiny Jasper.

I first talked with the PitCrew to find out why we need to search for sponsors EVERY month - why we can't just do it once or twice a year and be set. I said it seems like every time we turn around - and turn around - and turn around we are having to ask for another sponsor. But then Mom explained how it worked and I finally understood.

I still don't quite grasp what, exactly, a 'bill' is, but those pesky things seem to come up on a pretty regular basis and things seem to go pretty haywire if they don't get paid. I even offered to go without a bone or a soft chew to help with the power bill, but I still don't understand why that won't help...

Anyway, all of us Adopt-a-Bulls got together and talked about it and finally decided it would be okay and we'd do our part and keep hitting the interwebs and begging and pleading for sponsorship monies each month. Oh, and the chubby pigs and goats did, too - can't forget THEM...

So, the full sponsorship for an Adopt-a-Bull - whoever you may choose - is $100; and for a pig or goat is $25. Of course, any amount is appreciated, it doesn't have to be a complete sponsor. Grab a friend, a co-worker, a complete stranger - and go in halfsies, tripsies, whatever, lol.

Today, we're focusing on Thaddeus, Thelma, Tiny Jasper - or even ME (Che-Lau), since I'm doing all the work anyway... but....

if you can! 🙂

News from Shaw PBR

During the month of September, we're going to bring you all the news that's fit to sniff, and probably some that's not. But, we're going to share as much as we can and hopefully keep y'all informed - or bored - or a bit of both ;)

To keep it fair, our reporters are going to go in alphabetical order, so we're starting with Akira Barksdale, our Chief Investigative Correspondent of Paw-litical Affairs.

Reporting live from the backyard, Akira has uncovered a developing scandal involving an unattended tennis ball. Sources close to the investigation say the ball has been sitting there for “at least 20 minutes.” Akira has demanded answers. She has also demanded the ball.

Today, Akira was tasked with interviewing Aunt Rhonda. You see, today is Aunt Rhonda's birthday - HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! So, we decided we'd make today all about her and tell y'all about how she happened to become a part of Shaw PBR and PC Phat Farm.

Aunt Rhonda saw a post on Facebook about a severely underweight dog that Shaw was in the process of rescuing and was asking for volunteers. Well, she answered that call and showed up that following weekend to help. To her surprise, however, she ended up helping at the Phat Farm instead. Having never worked around pigs/goats before, it was quite an experience. But, she quickly fell in love, even tho Skunk (our resident clown and prankster) snuck up on her and nipped her.

The following weekend, she showed up again; and again the weekend after; and eventually started coming during the week to lend a hand where needed. She said that even tho the dogs needed her, she realized she needed the dogs/pigs just as much as they brought her out of a depression she didn't realized she was in. Aunt Rhonda was eventually offered a part-time position and has been here ever since! We are so pround she is part of our Pitcrew/family!!

Aunt Rhonda takes care of all their medicines, bathing, vaccines, supplements, taking pictures, play time, exercise and enrichment; and pretty much anything else the pups may demand of her ;)

When we asked what keeps her going, she simply said: the pitbulls. She loves the breed for their loyalty and affectionate personalities, sees them as misunderstood, and treats them like her own dogs. She wishes each one could find a home but gives them as much care and affection as possible in the meantime.

Akira wants to point out that the whole time Aunt Rhonda was talking she never once offered to get the tennis ball and give it to her. Well, at least not DURING the interview. But, that's beside the point, right?

Oh yeah - she also wanted to remind you all that today was also Ten Dollar Tuesday and wanted to encourage you to . So - . :)
