Trainer Tip Friday: Gamifying Training – Make Learning Fun

Training does not have to be monotonous and boring. Too often, we think of training as a checklist of commands: sit, stay, come. But if it feels like homework for you, it probably feels that way for your dog, too.
The way you want to think about training is that you are creating a bond with your dog. Every session is an opportunity to deepen that connection. It’s not about whether they nail the perfect “sit” on the first try — it’s about the joy they feel when working with you.
When you gamify training, you turn learning into play. Your dog isn’t just following cues, they’re actively engaging, having fun, and wanting more. That energy builds excitement and momentum, which makes training faster, easier, and more rewarding for both of you.
What Does Gamifying Training Look Like?
Make it a Game, Not a Drill – Use upbeat tones, movement, and play. For example, instead of drilling “come,” play a round of hide-and-seek recalls around the house.
Celebrate Small Wins – Every correct check-in or cue is a chance to “jackpot” with rewards. That doesn’t always mean treats — it could be tossing a ball, a belly rub, or a few seconds of tug-of-war.
Use Play as Payment – Have a tug toy ready during training. When your dog nails a cue, reward them with a short, fun game of tug. This keeps sessions dynamic and taps into their natural drive.
Mix It Up – Change the pace, the rewards, or even the location to keep things fresh.
Add a Challenge – Just like leveling up in a video game, make each repetition a little more fun and tricky to keep your dog motivated.

As winter draws near, not everyone in our community has protection from the cold. On a single night in January 2025, 1,745 people were experiencing homelessness in El Paso County. Nearly one-third of those were unsheltered, sleeping outside, in cars, or in places not meant for living. (cpr.org)

Among those affected:

• More than 1 in 5 people experiencing homelessness are under 24 years old. (koaa.com)

• 89 military veterans were counted as homeless in our area. (springsrescuemission.org)

When the temperature drops, basic items like coats, hats, gloves, and food can make the difference between staying safe or suffering. Your donation does more than provide physical warmth — it offers hope, dignity, and care.

Trainer Tip Friday: Share the Training Load 🐾
At Zoom Room, we recommend aiming for about 20 minutes of practice a day—total. The good news? It doesn’t have to be one long session or the responsibility of just one person. Think of it as mini-reps throughout the day:
5 minutes of focused training here
30 seconds of “wait” before a meal
A relaxation protocol while watching TV
A quick sit & wait before engaging in play
Even with busy schedules, those small moments add up. And when everyone in the household takes part, your pup learns to respond consistently—not just to one person, but to the whole family.
When I work with clients in private lessons, I often ask them to outline what their dog’s typical day looks like:
Where does your dog sleep?
What’s the morning routine?
Who feeds the dog and when?
How does each family member interact with the dog?

Trainer Tip Friday: Three Phases of Pawsome Training
Over the past few weeks, I’ve surveyed several people and groups about what they thought would make great topics for Trainer Tip Fridays. The feedback was fantastic—full of thoughtful and creative suggestions!
While some of these topics might seem quick to cover, the truth is that even the most basic commands can become more challenging and practical when you start layering in distractions, distance, or duration. A simple “sit,” for example, may feel easy in your living room—but it can feel much harder at the park when a squirrel runs by.
And I want to pause here to thank you: I really appreciate your patience as my team and I brainstorm the best ways to present this information. My goal isn’t just to answer your questions—it’s to break them down in a way that’s practical, clear, and useful no matter where you and your dog are starting from.
That’s why I’ll be structuring each tip into three progressive stages. Just like in any great training program—whether it’s fitness, cycling, or dog training—you start with a foundation, then build reliability, and finally proof those skills in the real world.
🟢 Base (Acquisition)
This is where your dog first learns the behavior. Keep things simple, set them up for success, and reward often. For example, teaching “sit” in a quiet space with minimal distractions.
Trainer Tip: Don’t rush this stage. Clarity and consistency are your best tools here.
🟡 Build (Fluency)
Now that your dog understands the cue, it’s time to build reliability. In dog training, this often means working on the “3 D’s”—Distance, Duration, and Distraction, which gradually challenge your dog’s focus and response. You might ask for a sit while stepping back, while your dog holds longer, or while something else happens around them.
If you’d like a deeper dive into how to work those “3 D’s” effectively, check out our recent article: Work the 3 D’s: Distance, Duration & Distraction.
Trainer Tip: If your dog struggles, dial back one “D” to help them succeed, then rebuild from there.
