I swear this wool waits until I’m not looking to misbehave!

Some days I can walk away from the carder while it’s running and let it do its thing. Today is not one of those days!

Border Leicester wool, depending on the fleece, can require a little extra attention at the carder. This one definitely needed supervision.

Fall colors are a favorite of mine, and that shows up pretty regularly in the mill. Today it’s honey mustard combed top making its way through the pindrafter.

Even with machinery, processing wool takes time and patience. There are no shortcuts to turning a fleece into something useful, and sometimes it’s nice to slow down and enjoy the process.

This wool came from one of our old Tunis ewes. It isn’t the best fleece, but it has sentimental value, which makes it worth the extra time and effort. I decided to dye it and see what I could make of it, with plans to turn it into something special.

Not every fleece is perfect, and not every step goes exactly as planned. But there’s something satisfying about working with what you have and seeing what it can become.

One of the best things about running a wool mill is the opportunity to work with so many different breeds of sheep and experience the unique characteristics of their wool.

We can’t raise every breed ourselves, (darn!) but working with wool from other local farms gives us the next best thing!

This Dorset fleece is oh so soft, a little bit of VM (sheep living their best life) and carded up beautifully 🩵
