Refurbished Pets of Southern Michigan Refurbished Pets of Southern Michigan is the first stray dog prison program in the state of Michigan.

All our dogs are in foster homes before they enter training for 10 weeks. After graduating with manners the dogs go to their forever homes. It is our guiding philosophy to improve our communities, making a positive impact by taking advanced measures against animals suffering to perish due to human negligence and illegal, wrongful actions. We are passionate and ethically committed to save and rest

ADOPTER UPDATE ON ONXY FROM CASS COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL ON ONYX THAT GRADUATED FROM THE RPSM CANINE COMPANIOIN PROGRAM ON AUG 7TH!

Meet Onyx — Our Future COA Therapy Dog!
In honor of National Dog Day, we have some exciting news to share!
Meet Onyx, a one-year-old black Lab and the newest (and furriest) member of the Cass County COA family.
Onyx came to us through Cass County Animal Control and participated in a training program through Refurbished Pets of Southern Michigan. Soon, she'll begin additional professional training with Dog Training Elite Michiana to prepare for her new role as the COA's Therapy Dog.
Once her training is complete, Onyx will start spending time at the COA providing companionship, comfort, smiles and plenty of tail wags to the older adults we serve.
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has helped Onyx become the super pup she is today. Her journey from Cass County Animal Control to future COA Therapy Dog is a wonderful example of what can happen when organizations and people in our community work together.
There's just one important piece of business left to settle: her official COA job title.

ADOPTER UPDATE

Update on Koda (aka Polo 2024). Koda is the BEST snuggler and excellent with our kids. He had a history of separation anxiety, which is managed well- as he is almost never alone whether with his human family or dog companions. He has the patience of a saint with the kids, happily greets visitors, and is always ready for an adventure. He helps his best canine buddy overcome her apprehensions as nothing seems to phase him. He loves eating green beans and berries out of my garden, going for walks, and camping. He’s been a great addition to our family!

FROM JACE’S RECENT REPORT:

JACE IS A 2 YR OLD MALE PLOT HOUND MIX THAT WEIGHTS APPROX 63 LBS. ARCHIE GETS ALONG WITH OTHER DOGS AND KIDS, HE HAS NOT MET CATS SO INTRODUCE HIM TO YOURS SLOWLY. JACE ENTERS TRAINING ON AUG 7TH FOR 10 WEEKS AND WILL BE READY TO COME HOME WITH HIS FOREVER FAMILY ON OCT 16TH.
Jace is doing a wonderful job so far. He is been doing a lot of place work. His impulse control has come a long way. We have been doing a lot of leash work! That has been coming along slowly but surely. No more jumping, barking or mouthing. We haven’t seen any signs of separation anxiety yet. You would not believe how much self-control well. He is doing a good job with the crate. We left the door open in the front of the room and he went in and out on his own. Until we would shut it longer and longer. Now he is over it. He doesn’t really like the big yard. Some fear issues. Working on that also. He knows Sit, Down, Left, Stand, Middle, Wait and all by lure. He really knows the word NO! (ha, ha!) and YES (leave it).

Meet Puggy! Puggy is looking for a forever home. Unfortunately, this sweet girl has had 2 previous owners who have both passed. She was potty trained/ puppy pad trained at one time but it has gone down hill since the last passing. She is going to need some work but she is so sweet and loving and we know the right person is out there somewhere for her.

FROM ARCHIE’S RECENT REPORT:

ARCHIE IS A 4 YR OLD TERRIER MIX THAT WEIGHTS 56 LBS. ARCHIE GETS ALONG WITH OTHER DOGS, KIDS, AND MOST LIKELY CATS IF INTRODUCED SLOWLY. ARCHIE ENTERS TRAINING ON AUG 7TH FOR 10 WEEKS AND WILL BE READY TO COME HOME WITH HIS FOREVER FAMILY ON OCT 16TH.

So it’s been a very productive week for little Archie; well Archie has been training very well so he’s not so little anymore. We have been able to put about 6 to 7 pounds on him, which he NEEDED SO BAD! So doggy BOOT CAMP is in full swing, and Archie is doing very well! This week and every week until he leaves we focus in on his walking. He’s been here now for two weeks and it’s gotten better, but there is still work to be done and room for improvement. LEFT TURNS, RIGHT TURN, and FOCUS ENGAGEMENT is what we have been using to teach this little guy just how to walk without pulling, or bumping into our left leg. He has shown promise and we still have time to get it there, so that’s that.
We had a training session with Christine, the RPSM trainer. Archie did great! He even did his loose leash walking, in the rec room very well, he did recall off of her, and did some of his basic commands that they asked for. So Archie is on verbal with his SIT, DOWN, STAND. We still lure him a bit for the LEFT SIDE, RIGHT SIDE, and MIDDLE. He knows FRONT, and that is about on verbal too, hopefully by the end of next week will be. His PLACE work is coming along very well too! We can now send him to his place from about 4 to 6 feet. The CRATE work is coming along well to. So as you can see Archie is hard at work. This week we also CLIPPED his nails, and gave him a bath, which he did very well considering that he just got here that is always a plus.
Archie is going to be something very special, he already loves to cuddle, we have started teaching him FETCH and he has picked up on that very well! He loves playing fetch and he’s learning to bring it back and most importantly he’s learning OUT! He’s going to be great at this. We have been letting him have his sniff time to. We will walk him on an extended leash allowing him to explore, he doesn’t pull during this time, and he starting to look back at me which I reward every time! We have also been working on his manners at doors, making him sit and wait until we passed through first, and we RELEASE him with the command OKAY! Just letting him know that he can now come in or out with us. We are really excited on just where we can get him, whoever gets this Archie is going to get a really good dog with a lot of love to give. Please stay tuned in, great things are in the making……
