Get ready for more than a one liner on this one. This deer is my own personal one. It is in fact the smallest deer I have ever killed, while simultaneously being one of the ones I am most proud of. This is a Colorado public land mule deer. What it actually is though is a symbol of goals achieved. It represents going on a journey to lose 37 pounds and get myself in the best shape I have been in since college so that this go round in the mountains I would not be physically beaten. It's not just an animal, it's a dream of being in a location that will forever be etched into my brain now. It is about taking on the unfamiliar. It is about hours spent dialing in gear. It is about a fascination with being in the backcountry. It's not just a forkie. Next go round will I take another one like this, probably not, but I will forever be grateful for this one. Do hard things. Enjoy the struggle to get there. Allow setbacks to be growth. Let failures be motivation to keep going. Don't let anyone on the outside judge what a success is for you. Hunting is about more than inches, at times it is about more than management, and maybe even deeper than the blessing of the food it provides. It is about emotions, and memories, and climbing up mountains that sometimes are literal and sometimes figurative for other things going on inside of you. Have a good fall everyone, happy hunting.
