Update On Baby Spice
We were able to pick up Baby Spice late last night from Great Lakes VCA. She received an abdominal ultrasound yesterday. They found changes consistent with small intestinal disease. The G.I. panel still has not come back. They’re worried maybe she has a folate and balance as well as low albumin.
Treatment:
🤍GI Friendly Diet
🤍 Budesonide long term (prednisolone would be risky with her heart)
They also gave her subcutaneous fluids and suggested that we use MiraLAX to help move things along.
They are hoping with dietary management to reduce antigenic stimulation of the gastrointestinal track immune system, and the medication she will gain weight and her G.I. system will function much better.
She will see the cardiologist for a repeat echo and exam on July 1. They did not see obvious signs of advanced heart disease at this time. They feel that she is likely stable.

🐾❤️ Baby Spice Needs Our Village ❤️🐾
Some of you have been following Baby Spice’s story since the day she was born.
🍼Baby Spice came into the world in February 2022 right here in our foster home. She was born into a situation where none of the cats in the home had been spayed or neutered. Grandma cat and several of her daughters all became pregnant, and by the time we were able to step in, they were already full term.
From the very beginning, Baby Spice was different.
She weighed barely 2 ounces at birth, making her dramatically smaller than the rest of her litter. Her siblings were growing so quickly that we became concerned she would be crushed or pushed aside, so we made the decision to have her aunt raise her instead. Her aunt had kittens a couple of weeks younger and thankfully welcomed Baby Spice as one of her own.
As she grew, it became clear that she wasn’t quite like other kittens. She developed structural differences that affect the way she walks. Her hocks are dropped, her hips are unusually loose, and she has a unique little gait that everyone who meets her instantly falls in love with.
💊Because of those concerns, Baby Spice saw a critical care specialist at Great Lakes Veterinary Specialists in 2022 and was later referred to neurology.
During those evaluations, both specialists noted a significant heart murmur, with the critical care specialist identifying the concern first. Neurologic causes for her gait abnormalities were ultimately ruled out, but the heart findings led to a referral for ongoing cardiology care.
🫀Since then, she has been closely monitored by cardiology and has undergone multiple echocardiograms and cardiac evaluations. Her most recent cardiology appointment was about nine months ago. At that time, the right side of her heart was enlarged but stable. She is scheduled for another cardiology evaluation on July 1.
Recently, we started noticing some changes.
Her energy level was mostly normal, maybe just a little quieter than usual. Her appetite was actually excellent. In fact, she seemed hungry all the time.
But despite eating ravenously, she was losing weight.
Over the course of a couple of weeks, the weight loss became impossible to ignore. We felt strongly that she shouldn’t wait until her cardiology appointment, so we scheduled an urgent visit with her primary veterinarian.
Extensive bloodwork, urinalysis, and a cardiac ProBNP test were performed. Several of her laboratory values were concerning, her urinalysis showed bacteria, and her ProBNP was elevated.
Unfortunately, that left us with more questions than answers.
Because of her complicated medical history, we sent her back to the critical care specialist who first evaluated her as a kitten. She has spent the last two days hospitalized while additional testing has been performed.
We are currently repeating portions of her urinalysis, waiting on an extensive gastrointestinal panel that was sent to an outside laboratory, and working to schedule an abdominal ultrasound as quickly as possible.
Right now, we simply don’t know what is causing the weight loss.
What we do know is that we need answers.
The costs are adding up quickly. 💵
• Primary care examination and laboratory work: $408
• Critical care specialist evaluation: $175
• Specialty care, hospitalization, diagnostics, and testing at Great Lakes VCA: approximately $1,500+
• Upcoming cardiology evaluation: approximately $500
At a minimum, Baby Spice’s medical expenses are expected to reach $2,583, and that number could climb depending on what her ultrasound and additional testing reveal.
At the same time, we are also caring for several other cats with significant medical needs, including multiple cardiology patients, upcoming dental procedures, an eye removal surgery, and additional diagnostic testing.
It’s a lot.
And we can’t do it without the help of our village.
