Building confidence one Home Depot trip at a time

A puppy is not born knowing that shopping carts are normal, loud noises are harmless, or that weird Halloween decorations are not actually trying to kill them 😂

Confidence comes from experience

Every positive exposure teaches a puppy that new things are not necessarily bad things. Over time, those experiences start to stack up and create a dog that can confidently navigate the world around them.

That is one of the reasons we love puppy field trips so much. They are not just learning obedience. They are learning how to exist.

One of the biggest risks for high drive dogs is not a lack of effort. It is too much effort.

Dogs like Malinois are often so committed to the game that they will happily launch themselves into bad decisions without a second thought. They are not evaluating the height of the catch, the footing, the landing, or the potential consequences. They are thinking about one thing and one thing only: the reward.

That is where training comes in.

In the second clip, the frisbee was too high (I can’t throw 😅). Rather than allowing her to attempt a dangerous jump, I called her off and put her in a down.

A dog’s drive is one of their greatest assets, but they still need a handler capable of protecting them from themselves sometimes.

A simple session might look something like this:

Step 1: Start with a toy your dog already enjoys.

Step 2: Let them possess it. Resist the urge to immediately take it away or start asking for obedience.

Step 3: Approach and engage with them. Pet them, praise them, play with them, and show them that your presence does not end the fun.

Step 4: Create movement. Play tug, encourage interaction, and become part of the game rather than an obstacle to it.

Step 5: Let them win. This is a big one. Possession grows when dogs feel successful possessing things.

Step 6: Re-engage and repeat. The goal is lots of positive repetitions where your dog learns that having something valuable around you is rewarding.

Over time, many dogs start choosing proximity over distance because history has taught them that their handler adds value to possession instead of taking it away.

The goal is not to convince your dog that they cannot have things.

The goal is to teach them that having things with you is better than having them without you.
