CANIS CONFERENCE UPDATES
The CANIS Core Team just wrapped up a site visit at the Schaumburg Convention Center.

And this is shaping up to be something big.

Multiple stages. Two demo stages. A massive expo hall. A dedicated space for Saturday Night Fever. And room for the conversations that actually move this work forward.

This is not a sit in a chair and listen kind of conference.
This is where things connect.

CANIS+ Updates
We’ve added three new experiences to CANIS+:
🔥 Fire Circle with Amanda Gagnon
Real conversations about real cases. No phones. No recordings. Just people in the field talking honestly about the work.

⛳ Play Circle: Topgolf Night with Dr. Tim Lewis & Sonia Fetherling
Step away from the conference, swing big, and connect in a completely different setting.

📖 Story Circle with Dr. Patricia McConnell
An evening focused on reflection, storytelling, and the human side of working with dogs.

These are included with CANIS+.

Penny had a big morning today! She accompanied Sadie to the vet again and this time spent the whole time on her own little feet rather than my lap! She greeted some of the staff very sweetly albeit shyly, but her little stub tail was wagging!
She is officially available for adoption through acdra

We are proud to share that we are sponsoring the Losing Lulu Summit 2026. Losing Lulu is a grief support group for those who have experienced or been impacted by behavioural euthanasia. While awareness of behavioral euthanasia is growing, it is still often considered a taboo topic.

The Losing Lulu Summit 2026 will be held online, and will be completely free to attend live.

The Summit is bringing together speakers on a wide range of topics, including:
· Considerations when making the decision
· Behavioural Euthanasia Research
· Grieving the Loss
· Impacts on Professionals
· Clients and Professionals Sharing Conversation
· Behavioural Euthanasia in the Shelter or Rescue

We are honored to support the Losing Lulu Summit 2026!

Penny is our new foster puppy that will be available for adoption soon through Australian Cattle Dog Rescue Association. She is 10 weeks and we’ve only had her just over 24hrs. She is super sweet with just the right amount of independence and ability to entertain herself without being totally aloof or uninterested in interacting with us. She’s done well meeting my three dogs and is interested in Chad
Sing the cats if the run but does back down if they stand their ground. Our outside cat Pumpkin has let her approach and sniff him all over. Once she did that she moved on to other things. She slept well in her crate last night but does seem to be stressed in the car, hopefully we can work on that and she can overcome it. She’s super cute and snuggly! acdra

02/12/2026

I had an interesting thing happen to me the other day, or at least I think it’s interesting. I was getting a spa treatment that involved my hair getting wet. At the end of the treatment the technician said she couldn’t blow dry my hair because she was an esthetician not a hair stylist. I didn’t ask if it was law or a rule or just her policy but it got me thinking that something as simple as blow drying hair is seen as a specialized skill to only be performed by a licensed hair stylist, yet anyone can call themselves a dog trainer and take your money and do any number of things to your dog in the name of training and short of serious abuse, there is nothing regulating them and their methods.

The onus of making sure their dogs are cared for by qualified and experienced professionals is entirely on the dog owner. With so much conflicting information out there it’s so easy for some slick person to come in and convince you they can “fix” your dog guaranteed. I wish more of the public understood the incredible importance of requiring the person training their dog not only SAY they have the knowledge, but back that up with continuing education, certifications, transparency and clarity of their methods. It can literally be the difference between life and death for some dogs. If an esthetician is barred from blow drying someone’s hair because they don’t have the proper education/qualifications, your dog trainer better have more than a catchy slogan and confidence!

The best place to find qualified, highly skilled and educated trainers is through trusted organizations like Association for Professional Dog Training International and their trainer search.
