Across generations, plants have been worked with as teachers, protectors, and spiritual allies, supporting our communities in practices of cleansing, prayer, protection, and care.

For our next Ancestral Intelligence: Technologies of the Earth gathering, we’re honored to welcome Christina Puizo, founder of Papalotzin, to El Paseo Community Garden for Spiritual Herbalism, Limpias & Rose Medicine.

Together, we’ll explore spiritual herbalism and curanderismo through the ancestral practice of limpias. We’ll meet plant allies traditionally worked with for cleansing and protection, including herbs growing right here in the garden, and learn more about their meanings, uses, and teachings.

We’ll then turn toward rose and heart medicine as Christina guides us through a demonstration of a simple rose limpia. Participants will have the opportunity to practice a short version for themselves and with one another.

This gathering is an invitation to learn, experience, and reconnect with plants as spiritual allies and ancestral practices of community care.

If cost is a barrier, please email/DM us for a community ticket. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds.

After a beautiful beginning to our Ancestral Intelligence: Technologies of the Earth series, we’re excited to gather again for our next Community Medicine Making workshop at El Paseo Community Garden.

This month we’ll slow down and explore herbs that nourish the nervous system and support us through stress, grief, burnout, anxiety, and the weight of these times.

Together we’ll learn foundational herbal skills while creating a calming herbal tincture and a nourishing herbal tea blend.

Inspired by the traditions our ancestors carried, each participant will also prepare a small herbal remedy for someone else in our community and include a handwritten message of hope.

Together we’ll practice what it means to make medicine as an act of reciprocity, care, and collective healing.
This workshop is part of our ongoing effort to reclaim ancestral wisdom, household remedies, and relationships with the land as pathways toward collective care, cultural preservation, and liberation.

🌞 Summer has officially started and we are still filled with joy and tenderness from our magical herb walk with Dr. Rosita early this month.

Building on that momentum we are excited to continue this journey together with the announcement of our Summer Series workshop dates and topics:
🌱July - Herbal Remedies for Nervous System Support & Emotional Wellbeing (RSVP live in bio)
🌱August - Spiritual Herbalism & Limpias
🌱September - First Aid & Mutual Aid
🌱October - Herbal Remedies for Immune System Support

These workshop series are part of our new pilot project, “Ancestral Intelligence: Technologies of the Earth,” which explores how Indigenous and ancestral wisdom, plant allies, and land stewardship can support collective healing, resilience, and community care during these times.

Each gathering invites us to remember, reconnect, and reclaim relationships to plants, our bodies, one another, and the land.

As we welcome the energy of the Summer Solstice and this new season of growth, we invite you to join us on Sundays 10a-2p to volunteer, to support our U-pick, or our community market.

Earlier this month, we gathered at our garden for an Urban Herb Walk with Dr. Rosita Arvigo and Verde Holistic Wellness Studio. All we can say is that it was a magical experience and Rosita’s aura was felt miles away 💞🌞✨🤲🏽

Together we slowed down. We listened to plant & lineage stories, reconnected with ancestral healing traditions, and explored the plant medicine growing underneath our feet 🍃💚🌱🌳

For many of us, this gathering was also an opportunity to practice something rare: presence. The photographs shared here were captured on film as part of our invitation to minimize phone use and reconnect with the land, the plants, and one another.

The event marked the launch of Ancestral Intelligence (AI): Technologies of the Earth, a new pilot program at El Paseo Community Garden resisting the rise of Artificial Intelligence by connecting us to the original AI.

This project explores how ancestral wisdom, plant allies, and relationships to the land can support collective healing and liberation, cultural preservation, and community resilience during these times.

At a time when many of us are navigating uncertainty, disconnection, and rapid technological change, we believe there is power in reclaiming relationships to land, healing, and community that have been disrupted through colonization, extraction, and disconnection.

Thank you to Dr. Rosita Arvigo, Verde Holistic Wellness Studio, our volunteers, and everyone who showed up and shared their energy ❤️‍🔥🫂

This is only the first of more gatherings, workshops, and stewardship days to come. Stay tuned for details for our July 12th workshop.
