Haunted Hayrides start Friday, October 3rd and run every Friday and Saturday night through November 8th from 7 pm to 11 pm.

No Boo rides are offered for our medium thrill seekers from 7 pm to 8 pm. The trail will still be haunted but the scares from our Ghosts and Ghouls will not be as intense and in your face. Starting at 8 pm all rides are high thrill and spook ... you’ve been warned!

Tickets are bought at the gate, we accept cash, card, Venmo and CashApp. You will receive the soonest available ride time and then instead of waiting in line, you can enjoy the vendors, animals, and firepits at the farm until it’s your time to head to the load zone.

There is a 100-yard walk from the farm to the load zone. Transportation is available for those needing assistance, please let the front desk know when you arrive.

We will always post any cancelations here on our page so if the weather is questionable PLEASE check our Social Media page before coming!

This is our annual fundraiser and all profits go directly to the feed and care of our sanctuary horses and the future rescue efforts of our non-profit horse rescue. Please come support our cause and have a fun time doing it!

Happy Haunting!

Purchasing a Horse Online

- A letter of caution from the owner of Shoofly Farm Virginia

This morning we found out online scammers used my place of business to not only steal money from a family looking to purchase a horse but this father and daughter drove 3.5 hours to my farm to buy and pick up the horse. They were given our address for a horse that has never been on this property.

The sadness in this girls eyes when we explained to them that they’d been scammed was overwhelming. This was supposed to be the day she got her long awaited for horse only to be met with disappointment.

To help in the smallest way I saddled up one of our horses and took this young lady on a trail ride. I also was able to put the father in contact with a reputable horse rescue not too far from where they live that has adoptable horses. They left with a smile and thank you but my heart is still hurting for them and frustrated and angry with the scams that plague the equine community. I can’t fix it, just like I couldn’t fix their situation but I want to do what I can to help and share some important information regarding purchasing a horse.

There are many Facebook groups out there where you can in fact negotiate the buying and selling of horses, unfortunately they all at some point have scammers with convincing fake profiles listing horses for sale. If you or someone you know is looking to purchase a horse please try to contact rescues like Shoofly or other established businesses directly to avoid these scams entirely.

If you still want to try one of the FB groups NEVER give someone a deposit to come see the horse. If they ask for one please report them to the administrators of the group. ALWAYS ask to speak with the owner of the horse over the phone. Ask lots of questions about where this horse is located, is it pasture kept, boarded at a facility, how long has it been there?” etc. Ask for a video with proof the horse is in their possession or they have access to it. In the video they need to have something that proves a current date like a newspaper ( I know it’s outdated but you get my point). It’s so easy for scammers to download pictures AND videos of horses from the internet and then use them, so you need to make sure it’s authentic. Compare the photos you’ve been given of the horse with the region they claim the horse is located. This is central Virginia, you aren’t going to see a vast open sky, sand and palm trees behind any horse I would post a picture or video of.

The same level of caution should be used for purchasing a horse at auction, there are dishonest people taking horses to auction. If you are not very familiar with horses please take someone with you who is as there are many horses doped up and sold with issues at auctions, this happened to some friends of mine years ago and their story was heartbreaking.

Above all, remember, if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is.

It saddens me that this is the world we live in where people are cheated out of money, and time and even dreams of owning a horse. Again I can’t fix it, I wish I could but, all I can do is lend people some hard earned advice and hope they listen and share.

Please take your time with purchasing horses, be thorough. I understand the excitement of having your own horse but be meticulous and patient and exercise caution when finding your beloved companion, it’s best for you AND the horse. These diamond in the rough, nearly perfect fit, horses are out there waiting, it just takes time to find them and then it takes dedication and commitment to give them the forever they deserve.

Obviously I am biased, but there are so many rescues out there with amazing horses looking for their second chance and forever home. Please consider adoption before buying. Some of the most beautiful horse ownership stories start with a rescue and a willing adopter and you could be one of those if you give a rescue a chance at forever with you. ❤️

Happy Trails,

Brianna Ranshaw
