Adding complexity to your search when you and your dog is ready - The Double-Blind Search 🔍

Today’s 8 week Introduction to Scent Work students will wrap up their course with a single-blind search with pre hidden hides.

After today I recommend having a friend set a hide or two for you and leaving the area to try a double-blind search. 😉

Single-Blind Search
The Setup: The handler does not know where the hide is, but someone else (a training partner, coach, or the person who set the room) does know the location.

Purpose: This prevents the handler from unintentionally cueing the dog (the "Clever Hans" effect), because the handler genuinely has no idea where source is.

The Limitation: Because another person in the room knows the location, they might inadvertently give away micro-expressions, body language shifts, or eye contact when the handler and dog approach source.

Double-Blind Search
The Setup: Neither the handler nor anyone else present in the search area knows where the hide is. A separate person placed the hide beforehand and left the area (or a blind container setup was used where even the setter doesn't know which box holds the odor).

Purpose: This is the gold standard for advanced training and testing. It completely eliminates all human bias, environmental cueing, and accidental handler influence, ensuring your dog is relying 100% on their nose and scent theory rather than reading you.

We’ve added pre-scented cotton swabs for easy refills for your glass storage jars, or for keeping extras on hand without having to make your own.

They’re prepared in small batches for consistency and stored in Mylar bags.

Currently available in Birch, Anise, Clove, Cypress, Vetiver and Myrrh.

Ever played poker? ❤️♦️♣️♠️

An expert poker player knows how to read the other player’s “tells” to know what each player’s cards may hold.

This is what your job as a part of a scent work team is. You have to read subtle tells from YOUR dog to know when they are in odor or at the source of the odor.

The tail is often an indicator for many dogs. Is it up? Down? Wagging? Curled or straight?
