A few days ago, we got a desperate plea to help a shelter dog who appeared to have advanced heartworm disease. She was already coughing up blood, her stomach felt firm, and even the excitement of seeing a person would send her into heavy coughing fits.
Her name is Dazzler. She sat at the shelter for almost a month, becoming a true shelter favorite. Volunteers loved her deeply and kept her safe past the usual limits, knowing she deserved a chance. The shelter has a 28-day foster policy for starting doxycycline, and because of how much she was adored, they reached out in hopes that a rescue could step in quickly so she could begin treatment.
Thankfully, the shelter went above and beyond. They managed to get chest x-rays before she left, and when we took her to the vet today, we already knew what they showed:
Mild cardiac enlargement measuring about 4 intercostal spaces and dorsal displacement of the trachea, pneumonitis, and the classic โreverse D shapeโ of the cardiac silhouette โ all consistent with advanced heartworm disease.
Despite the grim findings, what stands out just as much is how many people fought for her. Staff, volunteers, and fosters rallied for Dazzler because she is that special.
Please welcome Dazzler to our rescue and keep her in your thoughts. She has a very long and risky road ahead, but she is surrounded by love. It will take a village to give her the future she deserves.
Special thanks to all the volunteers, her temporary foster, and Lexie for making sure she finally has a chance.
