Our first animal welfare highlight of the week is Piglet, whose story emphasizes the importance of proper pig care 🐷

Piglet was initially purchased as a “micro pig”and lived in New York City apartment with limited exposure to the outdoors. These first photos we have of him show his first time seeing grass; as you can see, he was one happy pig that day!

Piglet been able to grow up with lots of time out in our fields with his friends, but many other pigs don’t have the same luck. Every year, thousands of pigs get purchased as micro/teacup pigs (which don’t actually exist). Many owners don’t anticipate that these pigs grow to a much larger size than marketed, and require large spaces with lots of enrichment. Those placed unsuitable living conditions face severe mental/physical health issues because they can’t perform the same behaviors they normally would in more natural environments. This results in behavioral problems, which means they often end up re-homed or are abandoned. Therefore, it’s essential that those looking to own a pig do thorough research on their needs and intellect.

Huge shout out to Mylissa Davis who volunteers monthly to do bodywork on our horses at the sanctuary. Mylissa practices the Masterson Method, and our horses truly enjoy her coming. We also greatly appreciate that she is willing to work with our interns to explain what she is doing. Many of them are interested in equine studies and furthering their knowledge in Bodywork is beneficial to their future. thank you thank you thank you Mylissa.💕

Highland cattle are more suited to cold weather than hot with their furry coats, so we’ve given their paddock a summer makeover in anticipation of the hottest part of the year. Plenty of shade, fly control, and a huge oscillating fan to keep air moving. They just need a mini bar and some palm trees! 🌴🏖️

Ember Jane STILL hasn’t had her baby. We’ve been on alert for a week, closely monitoring her day and night. There is a camera on her at all times and some staff members have had literal sleepless nights watching over her.

Our vets don’t know why it’s taking so long, but as far as they can tell from their exams and ultrasounds the lamb is healthy and in the right position. Ember Jane is sectioned off in one end of the ewe pen so she can see her friends but also have a feeling of privacy and security.

We have the lambing kit all ready to go. What’s in a lambing kit? Adelle explains in the video! (Nutri-Drench is a liquid supplement that can deliver a lot of calories and nutrients very quickly to give the baby a little boost.)
