We've had a LOT of questions about dogs eating cicadas and ending up with upset stomachs--especially diarrhea. Here's what we know about cicadas and canine digestion:

🟢Generally Safe in Small Amounts
▪️Cicadas are not toxic to dogs.
▪️Some dogs may eat them out of curiosity or as a snack.

⚠️Potential Issues
1. Gastrointestinal Upset
🔹Vomiting, diarrhea, or drooling can occur if your dog eats too many cicadas.
🔹The hard exoskeleton can be hard to digest and can irritate the stomach.
2. Choking Hazard
🔹Large or excessive cicadas can cause choking or blockage, especially in small dogs.
3. Allergic Reactions
🔹Rare, but possible. Watch for signs like itching, swelling, or breathing difficulties.
4. Pesticides or Chemicals
🔹If cicadas have been exposed to pesticides, your dog could be at risk of poisoning.

🚨When to call the vet
▪️Signs of lethargy, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, or if your pet stops eating
▪️Signs of choking or abdominal pain
▪️You suspect the cicadas had been exposed to chemicals

✅What to do
▪️Keep an eye on your dogs during walks or outside time. Try to distract or redirect them if they show interest in cicadas.
