Centralia Humane Society

Centralia Humane Society The OFFICIAL page for The Centralia Humane Society. Our application process ensures that our pets will receive great care in their new homes.

Our adoption application and requirements can be found at www.centraliahumanesocietyil.org/adopt. We are a no kill animal rescue facility serving Marion County, IL. We require that potential adopters have their current/past pets taken to the vet yearly for vaccinations, and that dogs are on heartworm prevention 12 months out of the year. First time pet owners must agree to keeping the animals on h

eartworm prevention and getting yearly vaccinations. We are a small shelter run by a very small amount of people. Please be patient with us. Please also understand that there is only one of each animal and unfortunately only one home can be chosen. We choose homes that best suit each individual animal, not on a first-come-first-serve basis.

FREE WITH APPROVED APPLICATION! SPONSORED ADOPTION FEE.

Lucy is a 6 year old mix that has been in and out of our shelter her entire life. She is mixed with Australian cattle dog, pit Bull, lab, golden retriever, and black and tan c**n hound. This will be a long post, but please share and help us to find her forever home!

Lucy has been adopted and returned 3 times. She was adopted out as a puppy, and returned for not getting along with their smaller dog. Her second home was an amazing fit for her. Unfortunately this adopter passed away, landing her back with us. Her most recent adopter moved, and had to bring Lucy back yet again.

She has been looking for a home again for over a year now. For those of you that know Sparky that was with us for 5 years - this is his sister.
Lucy is not the easiest dog to find a home for. Here is a list of her needs for a home environment -

No other animals in the home
No small children
A patient and knowledgeable home - she is not solid on her potty manners even at 6 years old

She does have a bite history as well - if you are seriously interested in her please reach out to us and we will happily explain. The bites were not her fault, but unfortunately it does have to go on her record.

We KNOW there is someone out there for Lucy. Just look at the list of her good qualities -

Walks great on a leash
Listens well - knows sit, lay down, how to wait for permission to exit her kennel or for her food
Responds to her name
Rides beautifully in the car
Loves to snuggle!
Pretty laid back at this point with her age (she does still like to play and will get the zoomies occasionally)
Food/treat motivated
No known health issues

Please share, and help us find this girl a home. We do adopt outside of IL! Her adoption fee has been paid for, so all that is needed is an approved application.

Apply today at www.centraliahumanesocietyil.org/adopt. Adoption requirements include animals being spayed/neutered, taken yearly for vaccinations, and dogs on monthly heartworm prevention.

Meet Enzo!

He is a 3 year old beagle mix. Friendly and goofy as can be - look at those ears! He loves everyone he meets! Enzo does well with cats, other dogs, and loves kids! He enjoys snuggling, playing with toys, and watching for any food scraps you may drop 😉

Enzo does have a diagnosed luxating patella. He is overweight currently - weight loss is going to help ease that up a bit for him. He has already seen improvement with the weight he has lost since being with us!

Meet Gus!

He is a 1 year old male DSH. He is such a sweet guy, and has come a long way from his unsocialized start as a kitten. He gets along great with other cats! Some of his favorite activities include laying in your lap, and observing the world from inside of the cat trees. Slow introduction to dogs would be necessary, as he hasn't had as much exposure to them.

Meet Marble!

This gorgeous girl is estimated to be about 2 years old. Marble is a sassy girl, and likes things on her own terms. She would thrive in a quiet home, with no other animals or children. She does *okay* with other cats, but prefers them to not be near her. She would be happiest in a home where she can come to her owner when she wants for lovin', but is able to have her own boundaries as well.

Maci is still available, and she got a haircut! She is an 8 year old Yorkie or Yorkie Mix.

Maci has seizures, and is on both Phenobarbital 2x daily & Levetiracetam 3x daily.
She is also on Apoquel, Denosyl, & a prescription Liver Diet.

Maci is the SWEETEST little girl! She gets along with other animals, and LOVES people. She has not met a stranger!

Maci's medications are an extra $100-$200 per month. She also will require occasional rechecks on her bloodwork throughout the year.

Although she is a bit of a monetary commitment, Maci is a wonderful dog and houseguest! She is p*e pad trained, walks great on a leash, and is perfect in a home! She has been for sleepovers with staff, and is the best little girl!

If anyone needs some obedience/training sessions, Ashten is going to be in the area! She has done wonderful work on multiple dogs that have come through the shelter!

I'll be going to Walnut Hill and Sandoval on June 24th. I would have time for a mid day lesson. This will be a single lesson, not a program. If you need help with 1 or 2 things, this will be a great opportunity to get advice! This single lesson offer isn't available for aggressive dogs.

If I get good interest, I could work out a schedule to come to Salem/ Centralia area once a month for consults and lessons. Please tag anyone in the area who may be interested 😁

Is your dog in need of training? Reach out to us, and we'll help turn your dog into the ideal companion you’ve always wanted!

Well folks, here it is. Kitten season 2025 is here, and it's as brutal as ever.

We receive many calls each day from the public stating they have found a stray/dumped litter of kittens, or that their cat had an accidental litter. We currently have upwards of 60 cats at our facility. Our friends at surrounding rescues and animal shelters are all in a similar position. It is frustrating for us to turn people away, as well as for those that are trying to do the right thing by picking up adandoned kittens. We understand your frustration. We really do. Unfortunately we can only take in what space, and funding allows. We have to think about the health and well-being of our current population as well - especially with us having a two groups of immunocompromised cats in our FIV+ & FeLV+ friends.

The harsh, harsh reality is this -

There are too many cats, and not enough space for all of them. Not in animal shelters, not in furever homes, not in foster homes, not anywhere. The total cat population in the United States alone is currently at 74.1 MILLION. Cats are able to produce a litter of kittens as early as 4 months of age. One innocent community cat turns into 5, turns into 20, turns into hundreds of cats running through the neighborhoods and countryside of the place you call home.

We have seen comments on Facebook stating that our shelter is "so overcrowded" because we "never adopt our animals out". Our adoption requirements are clearly stated on the front page of our application. There are many shelters out there that have much stricter requirements than us.

No matter how many or how few adoptions we have, cat overpopulation is much bigger than our small little shelter. We currently have multiple litters of kittens, including some that were illegally dumped on our front porch.

How can YOU help?
🔹Spay & neuter your pets! Not only does this help keep accidental litters out of the picture, there are also health benefits to aid in the wellness and longevity of your kitty's life!
🔹Keep your cats indoors! This helps prevent death, reproduction, & even killing of wildlife species that are necessary for our ecosystem.
🔹If funds allow, get those outdoor kitties spayed & neutered! Getting the females spayed should be priority, as they are the ones carrying the litters. Our town and surrounding areas do have some options for low-cost spay/neuter/vaccination clinics throughout the year!
🔹Donate to shelters that are helping as best as they can to care for these litters!
🔹Help educate others! You never know who is unfamiliar with these realities, and how beneficial spay/neuter is - for everyone!
