The hot summer days are here, and at Village Vet, we're committed to keeping your pets safe and comfortable! Here are a couple of important tips to remember during the upcoming heat wave:
1. Hydration is Key: Always have fresh water available to your pets to prevent dehydration. consider adding ice cubes to their water bowl.
2. Avoid Midday Walks: Limit outdoor exercise to early morning or late evening when the temperatures are cooler.
3. Protect Their Paws: Asphalt and pavement get scorching hot and burn your pet's paw pads. If it is too hot for the back of your hand, it is too hot for their paws!
4. Never Leave Them in a Parked Car: Even with the windows cracked, temperatures inside a car can skyrocket to dangerous, life-threatening levels in a matter of minutes.
5. Know the Signs of Heatstroke: Watch out for heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, excessive thirst, lethargy, fever, dizziness, lack of coordination, profuse salivation, vomiting, a deep red or purple tongue and unconsciousness.

If you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke, move them to a cooler area immediately, apply cool water to their body and call us right away, 703-978-8655.
