It's World Lemur Day! 🤩

Celebrated annually on the last Friday of October, World Lemur Day is held to raise awareness for lemurs and the severe threats they face in their native Madagascar.

Currently, over 90% of lemur species are considered endangered, and 31% are critically endangered. The Buffalo Zoo is home to five black-and-white ruffed lemurs, a species that falls into the critically endangered category.

Lemurs play a critical role in Madagascar's unique habitats, and due to threats like deforestation and illegal hunting, many of these incredible species are at risk of extinction. Ensuring a future where lemurs can thrive for generations to come is critical, and the Buffalo Zoo is proud to support efforts seeking to save these amazing animals!

Say hello to Ava Grace and Rosie! 🥹

Our pair of female red panda cubs, who are now 4 months old, officially have names thanks to the generosity of our Buffalo Zoo community!

The names were chosen by incredibly kind donors through both our Rendezvous in the Zoo “RITZ” Gala and general outreach. These gifts play a critical part in advancing our conservation mission, and we are beyond grateful to our red panda namesake donors for their support!

Rosie, named by Danielle Bucella & Matthew Battaglia, is the cub with more red in her face, while Ava Grace, named by Scott & Adriana Dancy, has more white in her face.

Rosie and Ava Grace continue to grow and explore their outdoor habitat alongside their mom, Himalaya, and they are becoming more adventurous every day!

The best chance for visitors to see the cubs is in the morning and early afternoon inside our red panda habitat.

Amur tiger Sungari and polar bear Sakari are SO ready for Halloween 😂🎃

Pumpkins are great seasonal enrichment items for our animals, especially larger carnivores! They help to encourage natural behaviors and provide a fun, fresh item for them to interact and play with.

The Buffalo Zoo is hosting our Halloween celebration on Saturday! Spend your morning and afternoon at the Zoo before the trick-or-treating starts with special keeper talks and Halloween themed enrichment.

Happy International Snow Leopard Day from Milja, Altai and Sabrina! 🩶

Did you know that, unlike other big cats, snow leopards do not roar? An underdevelopment in their vocal tissue prevents them from creating those deep, powerful vocalizations you'll hear from a lion or tiger, for example.

Instead, snow leopards communicate through other means, like non-aggressive puffing sounds called "chuffs" or higher-pitched calls referred to as "yowls".
