Two new faces are joining a fan favorite in M&T Bank Rainforest Falls! 🐢

The Buffalo Zoo recently welcomed two new male red-footed tortoises named Nike and Moccasin, who will now accompany our resident tortoise Ralphie on exhibit!

Nike and Moccasin are brothers and both 28 years old. They were hatched on June 27, 1997 at the Como Park Zoo in St. Paul, Minnesota. They have both produced 10 offspring in their lives.

The new trio were introduced to each other beginning earlier this month, with all of them sharing pleasantries and continuing to become comfortable with one another.

It’s time for August’s Takeover Tuesday, and this month’s featured keeper is Sera! 😄

Sera has worked at the Buffalo Zoo for seven years, starting out as an apprentice keeper then transitioning to a full-time keeper on the carnivore team for the past five years.

She has multiple animals she loves, but one that’s particularly special to her is Czari, one of our cinereous vultures!

Her favorite part about being a zookeeper is building trust with animals. She prides herself on working with species that some people may not realize are highly intelligent, and are capable of learning highly meaningful behaviors that benefit them!

Follow along with Sera’s takeover on our Instagram and Facebook stories throughout the day!

The Buffalo Zoo is thrilled to announce the arrival of our new black howler monkey, Rio! 🐵

Rio is 6 years old and was born on Sept. 1, 2018 at the Scovil Zoo in Decatur, Illinois. She comes to the Buffalo Zoo on an Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan recommendation to breed with our male howler monkey, Tater (7). Before arriving in Buffalo, she resided at the Greensboro Science Center in North Carolina.

Her keepers say Rio is a bit shy but also inquisitive, exploring all over her habitat as she continues to get comfortable! She also has been heard howling on her own during her early days in Buffalo.

Be sure to welcome Rio to Buffalo during your next visit, and read more here: http://bit.ly/46V2Z64

We are incredibly grateful for all donations, and especially wanted to thank all the volunteers who helped make Saturday such a success!

The winning name will be shared tomorrow, stay tuned! 😸

As our male ocelot kitten continues to get comfortable with his new habitat, it’s about time we give him a name — and we’re asking our Buffalo Zoo community to help out! 😸

Our animal care team has chosen five name options for our ocelot kitten, and now, anyone can vote for their favorite in our online poll to decide what his name will be!

The five options are:

🐱 Paulo
🐱 Bruno
🐱 Copal
🐱 K**i
🐱 Luciano (Luca)

Voting is now open and will close at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 11, with the winning name being officially announced the next day, Aug. 12.
