We’re back with our new series diving deeper into our favorite projects we’ve done over the years…and this one is definitely at the top.

We were hired to make a paper replica of our client’s teenage daughter’s pet bird, Basil. Her daughter was going away to college and couldn’t bring her beloved pet with her. 😭 So she wanted us to make a stand in that she could have with her in her dorm.

This project was such a test to our skills, creating a frame structure to build the bird shape, plus getting creative about what materials we could use to create the perfect shapes. Next up was testing different papers, cutting techniques, coloring methods and shaping styles to create all the different shapes and textures of the different types of feathers…it was so much creative problem solving. Our favorite. ❤️

We ended up using spun cotton shapes, different weights of wire, and even styrofoam peanuts to make this little guy! And we used Italian Cartotechnica Rossi crepe papers we got from Cartefini in 180g and 90g weights as well as German Werola crepe papers we got from Lia Griffith and Petals and Pearls Flowers to make this project.

We found out about a year after we made this that the original Basil the Bird had passed away so we were even more honored to be able to create this special sculpture to celebrate this beloved animal friend forever. 🥹❤️

I'm gearing up to go back to the Women's Venture Summit in San Diego next week! Last year my company was brought in to create custom reusable paper florals and decor for the event and this year we're back, continuing to help make WVS more sustainable with our handmade seed paper name tags that grow flowers when you plant them!

We will also be highlighting ways that WVS is practicing sustainability in the coming days and throughout the conference so stay tuned for that!

Why make handmade paper? We make it for all sorts of reasons, and it can be used for any number of projects and artworks. We can make a custom set of paper for your printmaking, or paper with red and green flowers for your Christmas cards. Don’t need stationery sizes? We can make a custom order for you in any size from 4x4 to 18x24! We can even make custom paper business cards for you with a deckle edge.

Handmade paper can even be used as a tool of flower preservation. Any flowers or organic materials from weddings or parties can be dried and used in your custom order. Other materials like paper scraps and waste can be used for a custom paper order, like old envelopes, index cards or flyers. These are great ways to reduce waste, and make something new and useful like stationery or letterheads for your office, or as the cards or itinerary for a networking event or dinner. We think exploring the option of handmade up-cycled paper is a great way to reduce waste and bring sustainability to front our minds.

On the technical side, natural fiber handmade papers are also perfect for a multitude of projects. Fibers such as h**p, abaca, cotton and kozo make beautiful papers with their own unique texture, and look just as good with pigments or inclusions. We've used these for years in our artisan stationery sets, and for client projects like journals, cards and even handmade paper envelopes.

Lets talk about paper fibers!
Abaca is a fiber that is native to the Philippines. The abaca plant is a species of banana, and the fibers are derived from the stalk of the leaf. Not only is it used for paper, but the fiber is most commonly woven into ropes, textiles, and even wallpaper.

We've utilized our handmade abaca paper for multiple different projects, and in multiple of our signature stationery sets. We love the strength and durability of abaca, and the smooth, high end feel it gives to our products.

We love how it looks when tinted, or in it's natural tan/beige color, especially as a backdrop to dried flowers. What should we make out of abaca next?

Annual vacation with my kiddos is underway. It’s the best place, and while I’m tired from chasing after 3 kids all day without my hubby here, I’m loving the slow pace of cooking, eating and being outside on the water.

I needed this break so much as this whole summer has been go go go with different summer camps and juggling childcare and running the business, and preparing for a busy fall…my brain was literally running on fumes.

Some people are stress eaters…but I’m a stress not-eater and I’ve been off my healthy meal schedule for a couple weeks before this and I was so drained. It’s amazing what a few days of consistent, healthy food, not having to get up early and limited access to wifi will do for the mind and the soul.

I have a BUNCH of awesome stuff coming up in the coming months and I’ll be sharing about that even I get back from the water. For now, I’m headed back to the dock!
