Our house is pretty pumped that the World Cup is finally here. When the youngest hid the tv remote from her brother (and then couldn’t remember where she put it), the house was flipped into chaos because THE FIRST GAME IS COMING ON.

I have felt strangely validated reading reports that some European teams are struggling to adjust to our heat and humidity…You don’t say!

The oppressive humidity and w**d pressure are definitely here, but I’m so excited to be harvesting the first stems of some new things.

We’re taking a little break from market this weekend, but the flower stand is stocked for Friday and Saturday…come get your flower fix!

It has been a week of projects…planting, laying irrigation, building & organizing a permanent bouquet making station that is looong overdue. In the midst of the work, social media hasn’t even crossed my mind. So, thank you for checking the website (our digital availability list) and keeping the flower stand hopping!

Can’t wait to see you today from 10-1 at the Bridgeport Farmers Market! We likely won’t be at market next week, so come get your flower fix!

A (mostly) successful dahlia experiment:

We were sick of digging tubers and out of storage space last fall. We had planted a row of random excess tubers and decided they were perfect for an experiment. Every year, dahlias pop up from tubers we missed or broke off, so it SHOULD be possible to intentionally overwinter the tubers in the ground in our zone.

The plants got mowed down, topped with several inches of leaves, and covered with landscape fabric. This spring, roughly 65% of the plants came back…healthier than ever and already knee high.

In December, Jennie Love of the No-Till Flowers Podcast had an episode ( #46) about overwintering dahlias and confirmed our suspicions: Keeping the tubers (mostly) dry was likely the most important factor to success.

We’ll make some tweaks the next time around, but I’m very curious to track productivity and the ability of the plants to handle stress. We’ve had a few rough dahlia years, so fingers crossed!

Thank you for an amazing weekend at the flower stand and Bridgeport Farmers Market! Your support for our urban farm and other local small businesses is so humbling. Maybe being a little tired today helped with teary eyes, but I found myself completely overwhelmed with gratitude…even after 9 years in business and 4 years at the market. Thank you for showing up!

The last day of school Flower Friday is finally here! I can’t wait to have my kiddos home for the summer. If you survived the academic year, it’s time for some flowers.

The flower stand is stocked with killer bouquets AND minis, both featuring the LAST ranunculus of the season. Until next spring for those beautiful ladies….but peonies are finally getting their moment!

Recently, my youngest asked me if pictures were in color or only black & white when I was a kid. 😑

Here’s a photo…in color…of the beautiful campanula currently blooming. It’s gorgeous.

The clouds have parted for a beautiful market day! Come see us at the Bridgeport Farmers Market from 10-1!

If you grow peonies, you might have noticed that it’s been a weird year. Early heat caused the plants to push, but right as the plants set buds, a freeze blasted them. We have a significant amount of loss from bud blast on our plants. I guess that’s going to make what we DO harvest this season even more special.
