FLOWER FRIDAY: The last three weeks have been a blur of crock pot meals, concession stand hot dogs, scrubbing muddy white soccer uniforms, do we have cash to get in the game?, wait…what field are we at?…WHERE ARE YOUR SHIN GUARDS!?

In the chaos (and fun) of keeping this ship afloat, I remembered we still had one more crop left…cut flower mums are going bonkers. The flower stand is stocked with massive bouquets filled with mums, caryopteris, and eucalyptus. We also have dried flower bouquets and the last of our everlasting pumpkins!

Things quickly transitioned from beautiful flowers to lots and lots of dirt! The big dahlia dig is in full swing. Here are some things we've already done and are thinking about moving forward:

💐We chopped down plants and let the tubers sit in the ground for about a week. This tends to help the eyes develop so that clumps are easier to divide later on. There also seems to be a curing process that allows the skin to toughen up and, hopefully, make for better storage.

💐 I’ve stored the tuber clumps with the dirt on for the past several seasons. The reason is that I’m tired and don’t feel like washing them just yet 🤪 but that’s worked well for several season now.

💐 Tubers should be stored at around 40 F and 80% humidity. Sometimes that is hard to achieve. They also need a bit of airflow so they don't mold...but not too much airflow that they dry out. Ours go in crates lined with paper and a tarp thrown over them. Some folks have great success with plastic bins with a few holes or the lid cracked. Unfortunately, this part is 100% trial and error based on your space (so it can be frustrating).

Sometimes I forget how incredible it is that one single tuber multiplied into a whole clump of tubers! Dahlia tuber digging is like the last “harvest” of the season. 💗

If you bought dahlia tubers from us this spring (I hope you had awesome flowers!), it's time to start thinking about how to deal with them over the winter. Here are a few options that we are thinking about ahead of our big dahlia dig:

Option 1: Dig them up and store them. Digging tubers is how we handle most of our dahlias…but we sell the tubers in the spring. This is the most labor-intensive method. You also get the added bonus of worrying about them in storage all winter. Dahlia tubers are like a root vegetable, so they need root cellar conditions…cool temps and high humidity. If you can't provide those conditions, storage is tricky.
Stress level: Max

Option 2: Leave them in the ground. We had success leaving some of our dahlia tubers in the ground this past winter. We cut the stalks off, down to the solid part of the stem where possible (dahlia stems are hollow until the base). The whole bed got a thick blanket of leaves (at least 12 inches) and then we covered with landscape fabric and garden staples…and a few big rocks for good measure. We had a 65-70% survival rate the following spring. The key here is preventing rot. Eliminating excess moisture rather than maintaining heat seems to be important.
Stress level: Medium to low

Option 3: Do nothing. Hope for the best. Buy new tubers in the spring. If this is your speed, our dahlia tuber sale happens every March. 😜
Stress level: Zero

I have so many emotions looking at this photo. This might sound really strange, but more than any other season, I am so relieved to see the field flowers die. When working with a perishable product like flowers, the work never ends. The blooms don’t pause.

After the July 21 flood, we pumped out the water, threw half of our things away, and cleaned. Then life moved on. Sports and school started, and the flowers kept blooming. There wasn’t a spare minute to put the walls back.

There is still so much work to be done…dig dahlia tubers, plant peonies, plant tulips, seed cover crop…and I look forward to sharing all the dirty behind the scenes work. But today I’m thankful for the end and the opportunity to do it better next year.

I’m sad to say it, but no market for us today. Spring-Joanna was so much more hardcore. Fall-Joanna is too tired to wrangle a tent in a thunderstorm. I’m officially letting the weather win. 🤪

A little behind the scenes peek at prep for the last Bridgeport Farmers & Makers Market of the season! The magic happens in our old, too-small garage that functions as a cooler, storage, and flower workshop. Dried flowers are hanging everywhere, and our dahlia harvest counts are on the cooler door. I make piles of each type of flower and go as fast as I can, aiming for a 60 second bouquet! This little space has seen a LOT of stems this seaon. It has been a joy getting to share them with you. See you tomorrow from 10-1 to close out the market season!
