We know that having your pet wear a cone (Elizabethan collar or e-collar) is no one’s idea of a good time – not yours, and not theirs. However, the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks! We want to do everything possible to ensure that your pet has a smooth recovery. Pet’s may need to a cone to help recover from routine spays/neuters, laceration repairs, broken nails, skin irritation and allergies, etc. 🐾
- Prevents Licking/Chewing: Stops the pet from irritating or damaging healing areas.
- Stops Infection: Licking introduces bacteria, but the cone keeps the site clean and dry, preventing bacterial growth.
- Protects Sutures: Prevents pets from pulling out stitches or staples, which would reopen the incision.
- Reduces Inflammation: Stops the cycle of itching and scratching, which can worsen wounds and cause hot spots.
- Avoids Re-injury & Re-surgery: Prevents the need for costly and traumatic second surgeries to repair self-inflicted damage.
Remember that this is temporary necessity! While mildly uncomfortable for the pet (and you), the cone is short-term, but the consequences of not wearing it can be severe and long-lasting. 💕
Our veterinarians say that pets who wear protective cones as directed experience faster healing, maintain cleaner surgical sites, exhibit improved incision appearance, and require fewer follow-up visits for infection or irritation.
