Black fly bites are most commonly seen on the abdomen or the inside of the legs, where hair is sparse. They range in color from pink to bright red to almost purple. They are often mistaken for tick bites, due to the “bulls eye” appearance they generally have. Yet, unlike in people, tick bites don’t cause that “bulls eye” effect in dogs.

What should you do if you find a black fly bite on your dog?

Just keep an eye on it! It should resolve on its own in a few days. Treatment is not usually necessary, as long as there is no excessive itching, pain, or swelling.

If you are unsure reach out to your veterinarian who can guide you further.

🐾 Flea & Tick Season Is Here — Is Your Pet Protected? 🐾

As the weather warms up, fleas and ticks become more active — and prevention is much easier (and safer!) than treating an infestation or tick-borne disease later on.

At Brunswick Veterinary Clinic, we offer several convenient prevention options to fit your pet’s needs and lifestyle:

✔️ Monthly oral preventatives
• Quattro and Trio flea, tick, heartworm & intestinal parasite protection
• Credelio – flea & tick prevention

✔️ Year-long injectable protection
• Quantum – long-lasting flea & tick prevention with one annual injection

Not sure which option is best for your pet? Our team would be happy to help you choose the safest and most effective prevention plan. 🐶🐱

How To Remove a Tick from Your Dog

Lyme disease can be transmitted to your dog as soon as 24 hours after the tick starts feeding. Therefore time is of the essence to remove a tick as soon as you find one attached to your pet.
Always remember to check your dog for ticks after time spent outdoors (even if your dog is on a preventative), especially after spending time in the woods or thick grassy areas. If you spot a tick, never remove it with your fingers. Follow these steps for tick removal:

Step 1: Use fine-tipped tweezers to grab the tick as close to the skin as possible (don't squeeze an attached tick's body as this could push bacteria and other components of the tick’s saliva into your pet in the process).

Step 2: Using steady and even pressure, grab the tick's head with the tweezers, and pull the tick straight up. If the mouth breaks off, try to remove with tweezers or, if you’re unable to remove it, leave it and let it heal.

Step 3: Clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water.

Step 4: Dispose of the tick by putting it in rubbing alcohol, placing it in a sealed container, wrapping it tightly in tape, or flushing it down the toilet.

🦠 May is National Lyme Disease Prevention Month 🐾

Lyme disease is a serious, tick-borne illness that affects both pets and people — and it’s more common than many realize, especially in our region.

Ticks carrying Lyme disease are active whenever temperatures are above freezing, which means protection is important for much of the year.

In pets, Lyme disease can cause:
✔️ Fever
✔️ Lethargy
✔️ Joint pain or lameness
✔️ In some cases, kidney complications

The good news? It’s preventable.

✔️ Year-round tick prevention
✔️ Routine tick checks after outdoor activity
✔️ Lyme vaccination (when appropriate)
✔️ Early testing and detection

Let’s work together to keep your pets protected this tick season and beyond. 💙
