Oakdene Stables

Oakdene Stables A boutique boarding barn and racing stable in the heart of the Greenspring Valley. Full service boarding stable.

Originally built in 1735, Oakdene has undergone various additions and renovations throughout its history, and is a Baltimore County Historic Landmark. As a "boutique" barn, we offer a small, quiet operation featuring miles of trails along the Jones Falls waterway and over 150 acres of open fields to ride in. Summerfield Stables is located just a 1/2 mile from Greenspring Station at the 83/695 spli

t, minutes from Downtown Baltimore and Towson. Beginning as a tobacco plantation in 1700, Summerfield has been farmed continuously for over 300 years. With its location in the heart of the Greenspring Valley, the property was a regular hunting fixture of the Greenspring Valley Hounds and served as the original location of the Maryland Hunt Cup. Today, Summerfield Stables offers full care stall board, field board, and retirement board. Our operation is capped at 12 horses (6 stall boarders and 6 field boarders). Our distinctive stone stables were designed to stay cool in the summer and retain heat in the winter, with very large, matted stalls and fans. Happy Hunt Cup! With many making the pilgrimage to the worthington valley, where the race has been run for over a century, one can find traces of the original course here in the Greenspring Valley. In the early 1900s, Oakdene hosted the race, which started and finished behind the stables (pictured) and consisted of 2 circles through neighboring Helmore Farm and Brooklandwood (now St. Paul’s school). Remnants of the old locust posts that made up the fenceline between Oakdene and Helmore (see article picture below) still survive. As recounted in newspaper articles from the time, spectators would follow the race in horse & carriage along greenspring valley road, or watch from the overlook at Oakdene (pictured below) which to this day offers a spectacular vantage point of the horses (and hound) below.
