🍌🍦Banana Pudding Update 🍌🍦
These past few days have been incredibly challenging for one of our bakers: Banana Pudding. It all began when she stopped eating and drinking, which we first thought was just part of her nesting behavior. However, as time passed, it became evident that something much more serious was happening…
With no exotic vets available on Easter Sunday or overnight, we faced an agonizing wait to get her the emergency care she needed. By the time we could get her seen on Monday morning, it had been over 24+ hours without any food or water intake. Her kidneys were failing, her liver was struggling, and the four kits still inside her had sadly passed away at this point. The kits we discovered were also severely underdeveloped, which only added to the complexity of her condition.
Despite all of this, Banana Pudding held on for so long. Her resilience is truly astounding, and the fight she gave was remarkable. It’s absolutely incredible how she managed to endure without food or water, all while being pregnant for that long. When I finally got her to the vet, she was barely holding on, couldn’t stand and was extremely weak and on the verge of a full collapse. Dr. Hach and the entire team at Cats & Critters in Rochester jumped into action immediately, providing her with fluids, x-rays, ultrasounds, bloodwork, and constant care. Dr. Hach even took her home overnight to monitor her, knowing that there were no other exotic vets available in the area or even in our state to care for her overnight.
The dedication and compassion of the Cats & Critters team have given Banana Pudding a fighting chance. They syringe-fed her, bathed her, and provided round-the-clock monitoring. I’m so thankful for their tireless efforts and cannot recommend them enough for any bunny or exotic pet needs in or around Rochester, New York.
While Banana Pudding is still not out of the woods and remains on pain medication and syringe feeding, she’s slowly showing signs of improvement. Shes starting to nibble on pellets and hay again, as well as chew on her most favorite toys!
This situation is not common and has never happened to us before, making it a truly scary and stressful experience. We deeply care about our bunnies and always strive to do what’s best for them. This has been a learning experience for us, and moving forward, we will be even more diligent with monitoring, weight checks, and overall care for our mamas.
Thank you all for your love and support during this difficult time. 🤍
