👀 **Lily has a question...**

What are you doing this Saturday?

If your answer is "nothing important," Lily would like to suggest a trip to HSEC. 🐶❤️

This beautiful 2-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier is hoping you'll stop by and say hello. At 56 pounds, she's the perfect combination of playful, loving, and ready to be your new best friend.

Lily is already spayed, her adoption fee is **waived**, and she's ready to head home with her forever family.

Have a dog at home already? No problem! Lily can be a little selective about her canine friends, so we'll just arrange a meet-and-greet to make sure everyone is a good match.

So here's Lily's plan for your Saturday:
✅ Visit HSEC
✅ Meet Lily
✅ Fall in love
✅ Take home your new best friend

We're open **Saturday from 9 AM to 4 PM**, and Lily will be waiting. 🤎🐾

We need your help… 🐾

Right now, we have 12 working cats at the shelter who are ready to get back to what they do best — living life on their own terms.

These aren’t your typical lap cats, and that’s okay. 💛
Our working cats are low-interaction companions who prefer space, routine, and independence. They’re happiest with a place of their own — a barn, garage, workshop, or similar space where they can settle in and just be cats.

Some of these cats have been with us for a couple of months now, which is far too long for cats who don’t thrive in a shelter setting. They’re ready for fresh air, freedom, and a place to call their own.

Here’s the best part:
• $0 adoption fee
• Spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and ready to go
• We can even bring them to you (within 20 miles!)

All they need is:
✔ A safe, sheltered space
✔ Consistent food and water
✔ A short adjustment period to learn that this is home

We’ll walk you through how to set them up for success — it’s easier than you think, and we’re here to help every step of the way.

If you’ve got a space and the ability to give a cat a safe place to land, this is such a meaningful way to make a difference.

Let’s get these cats out of the shelter and into spaces where they can truly thrive. 🐱

☀️ Summertime at the Shelter is here... and so is our busiest season of the year. ☀️

While many people are enjoying vacations, cookouts, and sunny days, our team is caring for more animals than ever. It's not uncommon for us to welcome 100+ animals in a single week during the summer months.

From kittens and stray animals to owner surrenders and everything in between, every animal that comes through our doors needs food, shelter, medical care, enrichment, and ultimately a loving home.

Want to help?

🐾 Adopt
🐾 Foster
🐾 Volunteer
🐾 Donate supplies
🐾 Make a financial gift
🐾 Share our animals with friends and family

Every single action helps us save more lives.

And speaking of summer... the pup in this photo is HSEC alum Murphy, out there living his very best life. ☀️🐾 Stories like Murphy's are why we do what we do.

Read more about what summertime at HSEC looks like—and how you can make a difference—on our blog:

Together, we can make this summer our most successful one yet. 🐶🐱💙

Today is National Hug Your Cat Day! 🐱❤️

Of course, if you're owned by a cat, you already know that whether a hug is allowed is entirely up to them.

So if your cat enjoys cuddles, give them an extra squeeze. If they prefer their personal space, maybe celebrate with a Churu, a favorite toy, or a sunny spot by the window instead.

And if you don't currently have a cat to celebrate with... we just might know a few looking for loving homes. 😉

Share a photo of your cat in the comments and tell us: Is your cat a hugger, or do they believe affection should only happen on their terms?

🐾 Pinky's Training Update! 🐾

"All he wants out of life is to be loved. But don't we all?" ❤️

We recently received an update from Pinky's trainers, Will and Marvin, at Lakeland Correctional Facility through our partnership with Refurbished Pets of Southern Michigan, and we're thrilled to hear he's doing so well!

When Pinky first arrived, he wasn't feeling his best. Now, he's healthy, happy, and his personality is starting to shine. His trainers say he's really come out of his shell and is showing everyone what a sweetheart he is.

Even more impressive? Pinky has already started learning his basic commands and, in just a few days, has mastered sit, down, come, and place! His trainers describe him as a smart pup who is eager to learn and eager to love.

We're so proud of the progress he's making and can't wait to see how much more he accomplishes during the rest of his training program.

If you're interested in meeting Pinky when he returns to HSEC from training, please give us a call at 574-475-4732. ❤️🐶

Leah is proof that sometimes the sweetest dogs come from the hardest situations. ❤️

This beautiful German Shepherd came to HSEC as part of a large cruelty/neglect case about a month ago. Despite everything she's been through, Leah hasn't let it dull her spirit one bit.

She's happy, playful, and loves spending time with people. During a recent outing, she had a blast splashing around in the pool and exploring outside. She already knows sit, down, and shake (though she may get a little excited and try to jump for her treat!), and she's always ready for some fun.

Leah is around 6 years old, full of personality, and ready to leave her past behind for good.

After everything she's endured, we'd love nothing more than to see her curled up in a home of her own.

Come meet Leah today. 🐾

Every day, Carolyn waits.

She watches people walk past her kennel. She watches other cats leave for homes. She watches, and she waits.

For more than 3 months, Carolyn has called the shelter home.

She's a shy girl. The shelter is loud, busy, and overwhelming, and while we've seen her slowly start to come out of her shell, we know this isn't where she's meant to be.

What if the cat everyone keeps overlooking is simply waiting for the right environment to shine?

What if the cat hiding in the corner today becomes the cat who follows you from room to room tomorrow?

We'll never know unless someone gives her that chance.

Carolyn isn't asking for much. A quiet home. A patient family. A little understanding. Maybe a few Churu treats.

She may not be the cat who grabs your attention first. But that doesn't mean she deserves to spend another day waiting.

If you have room in your heart for a cat who needs a little extra time, please come meet Carolyn. ❤️🐾

🐾 Alumni Feature: Sophie (formerly Nellie!) 🐾

Some of you may remember Nellie, one of our long-term residents who spent more than 150 days waiting for her perfect family. We are so excited to share that she's now living her best life as Sophie! ❤️

Her mom, Hannah, recently gave us this update:

"It’s been about a month now since we adopted Nellie who we now call Sophie! She’s adjusting well. Best decision we ever made!"

Stories like Sophie's are exactly why we never give up on our long-term residents. Sometimes the perfect match just takes a little longer to find, but when it happens, it is absolutely worth the wait.

Thank you, Hannah, for giving Sophie the loving home she deserved and for sharing this wonderful update with us!
