Legend is serving as a therapy dog for the Sugar Grove Church VBS this week bringing joy and sharing God’s love with hundreds of kids. It’s an honor to be on the other end of the leash.

YES! to all of this. Thank you, Laura, for all the great work you do!

YES! to all of this. Thank you, Laura, for all the great work you do!

The "Place" command gets thrown around so often, but I have found that many don't understand the concept or why trainers go on and on about how useful and important it is! So what is "Place"
Simply put "Place" is any object with four definable boundaries that you send your dog to - a dog bed, cot, blanket, rug... the list goes on and on!
Most importantly "Place" is a calm command - meaning that when taught properly you can take a dog that is going a hundred miles an hour mentally and, within a few seconds, the dog will reach a calm mental state.
How is "Place" different from the "Down" command? Down can, and should be taught with the same duration and state of mind; but place still has a different perception (when taught properly). This especially is true with nervous and easily overwhelmed dogs. Each dog that comes through my doors is taught that no one will approach and bother/touch them on place. This applies to young children, other dogs, strangers and anyone the dog is uncomfortable with. The dog should be left alone on place - this is the dogs "SAFE PLACE" if you will.
Of course this requires the owners to advocate for their dog.
The result is a dog that can shut out its surroundings and relax in normally uncomfortable situations.
I often find that once dogs have a strong understanding of place will begin to "send" themselves to place when they are starting to feel overwhelmed while allowed to roam freely!
It is important to note that much time goes into teaching place hundreds of repetitions, many many hours of duration, and a massive amount of proofing before a dog fully understands the concept and will quickly and easily relax on place in stressful situations. But, when taught properly Place is an absolutely amazing command to watch in action!

Social outings are one of my favorite parts of Puppy Boot Camp. Tucker did a great job showing off his obedience in several different locations this evening. Of course, it always helps to have a Trustee mentor like Legend!

Lad and Legend were in the news again. So thankful for the impact Lad is still having through the lessons he left behind.

LAGRANGE COUNTY, Ind. -- “Lessons from Lad” isn’t your traditional dog training book. Christine Ferris created it to train and uplift both dogs and their owners from her journey and loss of her Rough Collie, Lad.

Place Training is such a powerful tool! Trustee and Legend maintained “Place” for over an hour while we waited to present The Five Ps of Powerful Communication at 4-H last evening. STRUCTURE = SECURITY for dogs and Place Training made them feel safe even though they were up on stage alone.

If you’re looking for fun, engaging leadership presentations for a youth organization, please reach out to us!

Meet the Team

Christine’s journey with dogs began at the age of ten when her grandparents gifted her with a Shih-Tzu puppy. Her nine-year tenure in 4-H Dog Club launched her interest in K9 Training, a trade she pursued part-time following high school graduation.

In 2013, Christine brought home two 7-week-old puppies from the same litter: Trouper, a low-drive, laid back fellow; and Trustee, a high-drive, aggressive pup who quickly became a handful.

By 3 months of age, Trustee appeared to be on a fast track to becoming a rescue.

When all attempts to train Trustee only increased his aggressive tendencies, Christine began to earnestly search for answers. The authentic principles she discovered transformed her approach to training and became the major turning point in Trustee’s behavior.
