We want to take a moment to address the concerns being shared about the care of our animals. We take any allegation regarding animal welfare very seriously because the health and well-being of every animal in our care is something we care deeply about.
It’s important to remember that what an animal looks like to us as humans does not always tell the full story. Lions are naturally adapted to warm climates, and research has documented their ability to tolerate significant temperature fluctuations. They regulate their body temperature through behaviors such as seeking shade, reducing activity, and panting. Research has also found that lions generally make relatively little use of water for cooling compared with many other species.
All of our animals have access to shade, water, and cooler indoor areas where they can choose to retreat from the outdoor conditions. As you can see in the video, two of our big cats are choosing to use their rooms. Chulo, the cat in question, has chosen not to use his room and instead is resting in a shaded portion of his habitat. Their behavior, comfort, and overall well-being are continuously monitored by our staff. As well as visits throughout the year from four different animal welfare agencies.
We encourage people to come visit, see our facilities for themselves, and form their own opinions based on what they observe. Our doors are open, and so are we to having a respectful conversation about the care of our animals.
