What happens when seizure medication isn’t enough to control a pet’s epilepsy? 🧠

While many pets respond well to seizure medications, approximately 1 in 3 dogs with epilepsy may not achieve adequate seizure control.

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) offers a promising alternative approach for dogs with difficult-to-control epilepsy. Through the Milo VNS System, mild electrical stimulation is delivered to the vagus nerve to help reduce seizure frequency and severity over time.

Southeast Veterinary Neurology is proud to be the third veterinary hospital in the United States to adopt this innovative technology, providing another treatment option for pets living with epilepsy.

Forebrain dysfunction can affect a pet’s behavior, awareness, vision, movement, and even cause seizures or circling.

Four neurological conditions that can affect the forebrain include brain tumors, strokes, brain inflammation, and hydrocephalus. While these conditions can share similar neurological signs, determining the underlying cause is essential for guiding treatment and prognosis.

If your pet suddenly begins circling, experiencing seizures, showing behavior changes, pressing their head, or having difficulty seeing, a neurological evaluation may be recommended.

Neurological conditions may be discussed more often in dogs, but cats can experience complex disorders affecting the brain, spinal cord, and nervous system too. 🐱🧠

Conditions such as FIP, meningioma, CNS lymphoma, ischemic myelopathy, and inner or middle ear infections can cause neurological signs in cats. Depending on the condition, these may include changes in behavior, difficulty walking, balance problems, seizures, or weakness.

Early recognition and appropriate neurological care can make an important difference for many feline patients.
