There's a photo in almost every family collection that nobody can identify anymore. 📸

Who were they? What was their story?

For genealogists and family historians, photos are some of the most powerful records we have — but only if the context is preserved alongside the image.

Here's how I encourage families to preserve stories, not just snapshots:

✍️ Caption photos while people who remember them are still here
🧬 Pair photos with genealogy records — tie a face to a name in your family tree
🗂️ Create a "family archive" organized by generation or family branch
📖 Record voice memos or video stories to go alongside old photos
👥 Tag people by name using facial recognition so future generations can search

The goal isn't a perfect archive. The goal is enough context that your grandchildren know who their great-grandparents were.

This is one of my favorite ways to think about digitization, because it's not just about preserving the past. It's also about freeing up space in your present.

Those boxes of photos in the closet? The VHS tapes stacked in the garage? The slides nobody has looked at in 30 years? They're taking up physical space in your home AND mental space in your head.

When's the last time your family actually sat together and looked at old photos? 🤔

Most people I ask get a little quiet when they answer that question.

We have thousands of photos — on our phones, on our computers, on old USB drives — and most of them never see the light of day. We preserve them, but we don't share them.

Here are a few of my favorite ways to change that:

📬 Share an album link with a faraway family member
🎥 Stream an old home video at your next family dinner
📖 Create a photo book as a gift or just for yourself
📱 Text one old photo to a sibling with a "remember this?" 😄

Sharing doesn't have to be a big project. Sometimes it's as simple as sending one photo to one person and letting the memories come flooding back for both of you.

Here's something I wish more people knew: 📢

Raise your hand if you've inherited a box of family photos you don't know what to do with. 🙋

This photograph is one of many I've inherited over the years. It's a four-generation portrait, and the baby in the picture is my grandfather.

Think about that for a moment.

Someone took the time to sit everyone down for this photo. Someone carefully tucked it into an album or box. Someone decided it was important enough to save.

And because they did, I get to see the faces of people I never had the chance to know.

If you've inherited boxes of old photos, albums, slides, or loose prints, you don't have to have it all figured out before you start preserving them.

Start small:
📸 Scan one photo.
📝 Write down one name you remember.

You don't have to do everything today. But these stories matter. The people in those photographs mattered.

This photo survived long enough to make its way into my hands. My job now is to make sure it survives long enough to reach the next generation.

What's hiding in your closet right now?

Be honest. 😄

VHS tapes with handwritten labels?
