With fireworks less than two weeks away, it’s time to start planning how to keep your pet calm and safe during this 4th and 24th of July.

Keep your pet inside, put them in a safe room with a sound machine or tv playing to distract them. Get them lots of exercise before fireworks start. If they have access to outside from a dog door, make sure their tags and microchips are up to date, in case they get lost.

Lastly for our really nervous friends, get some anxiety/calming medications to make their night(s) easier during firework season. Contact us if you’re needing medication for your pet, don’t wait until the day before as it can take up to 24 hours to get medications filled.

Hope wants to talk to you about gastropexy and why it’s important for our bigger friends. Gastropexy surgery is an abdominal surgery where the stomach is tack to the abdominal wall to prevent it from flipping on itself. If the stomach flips on itself, it is a life threatening emergency.

Recommended breeds to get gastropexys are mastiffs, Great Danes, shepherds, Labs, Golden Retrievers, standard poodles, and large doodle mixes. Or if your pet has a deep barreled chest.

Gastropexy surgery can be done at any time but recommended to get it done when your pet is spayed or neutered.

If you’re unsure if your pet should have a Gastropexy performed, schedule an appointment with our doctors to discuss.

Foxtail season came in HOT this year! With such a dry winter, foxtail season started early and we have seen foxtail cases every day for the past few months.

Foxtails are a grasslike w**d that love to wreck havoc on our pets. Their barbed like structure makes them catch onto fur and skin, most commonly the paws, armpits, ears, sometimes eyes, nose and mouth. If not found, they will burrow their way into the skin, most commonly their toes. If in ears, we’ve seen them burrow into the ear drum rupturing it. Either way, foxtails cause a lot of pain for our furry friends.

If foxtails burrow into the paw, majority of pets have to be sedated to explore the wound and it’s a 50/50 chance a foxtail will be found. Sometimes foxtails will find their way out on their own and sometimes they will migrate further into the body.

Foxtails can be found in the mountains, along sidewalks in neighborhoods or even your yard. They spread like wildfire, one seed can produce a horde of foxtails.

Got stones? Bladder stones! This surgery, called a cystotomy, was one of the most stones our doctors have gotten out of a dog.

Bladder stones usually come down to genetics but can also be affected by their diets. Bladder stones are usually seen in small breed dogs but large dogs and cats can also get them. When it comes to symptoms of bladder stones, it mimics the pet having a UTI and the best diagnosis is taking an xray.
