Dr. Carlson is available for your horse's next dental exam!

Oral health is extremely important for all animals, including your horse!

Did you know that: 🐴🦷👩‍⚕️
- horses chew in a circular fashion
- horses teeth continue to erupt as they age
- this creates sharp points in the enamel on the outside of their top teeth (maxillary arcade) and the inside of their bottom teeth (mandibular arcade).
- Floating (aka odontoplasty) is performed to reduce these points to prevent irritation to the cheeks and/or tongue.

A thorough exam should be included in every dental!

Consider your horses' respiratory health as the Western US continues to combat wildfires and smoke.

From Kentucky Equine Research (data collected from the recent Australian Brush Fires).
- Smoke contains toxic chemicals like carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen sulfide, and ammonia that can lead to thermal/chemical irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract.
- Tissue damage from smoke inhalation can result in coughing, lethargy, elevated heart rate, elevated respiratory rate (fast, shallow breathing), and nasal discharge.
- To aid in the recovery of lung function and health, veterinary intervention may be warranted.

Exercise Recommendations:
Track your local AQI (Air Quality Index: via www.airnow.gov)
If AQI > 100, consider limiting or reducing exercise for sensitive individuals
If AQI > 200, postpone or cancel training or competition.

Dr. Carlson is prepared with a Flexineb equine nebulizer to provide aerosolized medications such as bronchodilators and corticosteroids.

Please reach out if you have any concerns.

Tips for caring for your horse during our Colorado weather changes:

With the abundance of smoke in the air and the cold front moving in, hydration is key for your horse!
- Keep fresh water available to your horse at all times!
- Consider a warm bran mash tomorrow evening as this is the first cold snap of the year. This will also encourage your horse to drink.
- Add carrots, apple slices, or a small amount of grain/sweet feed into the bottom of a water bucket. This will entice your horse to drink!

Dr. Carlson is available for emergency calls if you feel your horse is in respiratory distress or is experiencing discomfort due to colic.
- Respiratory Rate > 30 breaths/minute
- Increased abdominal/chest movement with each breath
- Flared nostrils
- Pawing, stretching without urination, flank watching
- Rolling or laying down for prolonged periods of time
- Decrease in manure output
- Not interested in feed

Dr. Carlson is fully equipped to treat colics and has a Flexineb (Equine Nebulizer) which provides aerosolized saline and drugs (i.e. antibiotics or bronchodilators) to ease respiratory discomfort.
