Sun’s out, paws out! 🐾 With the summer heat kicking in, it’s super important to keep those puppy pads safe. Have you heard of the 7-Second Hand Test?

According to the Cornell Riney Canine Health Center, before you head out for a walk, you should place the back of your hand on the pavement. If you can’t comfortably hold it there for 7 seconds, it’s way too hot for your dog’s paws! Pavement, asphalt, and even some artificial turfs can reach temperatures that cause serious burns in a matter of seconds.

That’s one of the reasons we love our natural grass play areas here at Green Acres. 🌿 Real grass stays significantly cooler than man-made surfaces, allowing our furry friends to run, romp, and play safely even when the sun is shining. We believe in providing a true dog environment where they can just be dogs: without the worry of hot paws.

Ever wonder why your pup looks so satisfied after a big drink of water? It turns out, they aren’t just quenching their thirst: they’re actually tasting the water! 👅💧

Dogs have specialized taste buds at the tip of their tongue specifically designed to react to water. While humans mostly taste the minerals or additives in our drinks, dogs have receptors that are tuned to the chemical properties of H2O itself. These receptors are located right where the tongue curls into a ladle to lap up liquid. They even become more sensitive after a meal or a salty snack, making that bowl of fresh water taste like a gourmet treat!

As the Oregon sun starts to shine, keeping our K-9 guests cool is a top priority: and a science! ☀️

Unlike humans, dogs don’t sweat through their skin. They rely on evaporative cooling through panting and vasodilation (widening of blood vessels) in their ears and paw pads to release heat.

At Green Acres, we manage the physics of cooling by providing constant access to shade, fresh water, and our natural grass fields: which stay much cooler than artificial turf! Understanding the physiology of heat regulation allows us to keep the fun going safely, even on warmer days.

Did you know that your dog’s heart can tell us exactly how well they’re recovering after a big day of play?

At Green Acres K-9 Resort, we’re big believers in the science of canine wellness. One of the coolest ways to understand a dog’s internal state is through Heart Rate Variability (HRV). Research, such as "Heart Rate Variability as a Proxy for Canine Stress" in the journal Physiology & Behavior, shows that HRV is a direct window into the autonomic nervous system.
