Late-summer walks are wonderful: but dried grass heads can hide a sharp hazard for dogs. Foxtails are barbed seeds that may burrow into the skin, paws, ears, or nose and generally wonā€™t work their way back out on their own.

After walks, take a moment to:
ā€¢ Shake out your dogā€™s coat
ā€¢ Check carefully between the toes and paw pads
ā€¢ Inspect the ears, especially for dogs with longer ear or facial fur

Contact your veterinarian promptly if you notice sudden sneezing or pawing at the nose, head shaking or tilting, limping, excessive paw licking, red or swollen skin, or a draining bump. Avoid digging or probing for a suspected foxtail: professional care is safest.

At Green Acres K-9 Resort, grooming helps keep fur between the toes and around the ears tidy, giving foxtails fewer places to hide and making regular checks easier. Trimming isnā€™t a guarantee against foxtails, so a quick inspection after every walk is still important.

It can be surprisingly tricky to tell the difference between a pup thatā€™s over-the-moon excited and one thatā€™s feeling overwhelmed. Research on physiological markers of arousal shows that things like heart rate and cortisol levels spike in both states! Since the internal "engine" looks the same, we have to look at the subtle body language cues to know how they really feel.

At Green Acres K-9 Resort, our holistic approach means weā€™re always monitoring these signs. A true "joy" smile usually comes with relaxed, squinty eyes, a soft mouth, and a wiggly body.
