Ever caught your dog looking like they’re laughing during a game of tag?
That wide-eyed, relaxed, open-mouthed expression is what researchers call the 'Play Face!' It’s a specialized social signal that dogs use to tell their friends, "Hey, I’m just playing, everything is friendly!"
According to research (Palagi et al., 2015), dogs actually engage in "rapid mimicry" of this face. When one dog shows a play face, the other often flashes it back within a fraction of a second. This instant communication helps keep the energy positive and prevents play from being misunderstood as something more serious.
At Green Acres K-9 Resort, we’re obsessed with these subtle cues. Our team is trained to recognize healthy social signals like the play face to ensure every pup in our daycare and boarding feels safe, understood, and ready for fun. Whether they’re wrestling in the grass or chasing a ball, we’re here to make sure they’re speaking the same language in a true dog-friendly environment.
