Simply Cats is Boise, Idaho's no-kill, cageless feline adoption center. Simply Cats got its start (with just six cats!) as Just Strays Animal Foundation, Inc., in a one room office in 1986. Thanks to a very dedicated group of people, the shelter grew and moved into a larger building. In 2006, the name of the organization was changed to Simply Cats A

Thanks to generous donors, the facility was constructed and donated in 2007 and has been our home ever since. Today, Simply Cats Adoption Center shelters over 100 cats and kittens and operates due to the hard work of a small staff and many volunteers. Simply Cats is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that relies on donations for funding.

Every year, we’re honored to recognize one volunteer and one foster whose dedication has made an extraordinary impact. Please join us in celebrating our amazing Volunteer of the Year, Mary, and Foster of the Year, Dianne. 🎉

Mary shows up week after week with quiet reliability, caring for our cats as both a Room Cleaner and Room Porter. She mentors new volunteers with patience and care and represents Simply Cats at community outreach events, even in the rain, helping share our mission with the wider community. She steps in wherever she’s needed and ensures our cats receive the best care possible.

Thank you, Mary, for being such a ray of sunshine and for the warmth you bring to everything you do.

Dianne opens her home to the cats who need the most time, patience, and stability—the sick, the shelter-stressed, the shy, and the medically complex. She offers safety, trust, and emotional space, helping cats rediscover comfort and connection. She partners closely with our staff, communicates clearly, and ensures every cat in her care has the best possible chance at recovery and adoption. Quite simply, the cats who could not survive the shelter survived because of her.

Some cats take a little extra time to show their true colors, and Cinco is one of them. He arrived at Simply Cats extremely scared, along with his two sisters from a busy Stinker gas station.

During his intake, he was hissing, had very dilated eyes, and would not come out of his carrier. Slowly, he started to trust us, giving gentle slow blinks and enjoying a little Churu lickable. Using a towel to reduce visual stimulation, we helped him feel safe while we completed his exam.

Once on our adoption floor, Cinco joined our Feline Right at Home program. For the first few weeks, he mostly stayed in the catio while volunteers focused on helping him build confidence and a sense of safety.

At first, he ran from anyone trying to approach, but now Cinco follows people around, seeks pets, head butts, rubs against legs, and even greets visitors at the door.

Cinco has radial nerve paralysis on one front paw, which causes a shortened forearm that is often crooked and turned inward. He gets around very well, and this condition is not considered painful. However, pressure sores or arthritis could develop later in life, so he may need a little extra care.

Now 8 months old, Cinco’s journey shows how patience, love, and trust can help a shy kitty blossom into a more confident, affectionate companion.

Please don’t overlook senior cats. They may be older, and they may move a little slower. Their fur might be a bit scruffy. But their hearts? Their hearts are still full of pure, unwavering love.

Many come into our care after spending years in a loving home, only to lose everything familiar when their owner sadly passes away or must move into a care facility. Suddenly, the routines they once knew are gone, and they must learn to trust again.

They don’t ask for much—just a soft place to rest, gentle hands, and someone who finally chooses them.

When you adopt a senior cat, you’re not just giving them a home....you’re giving them their final chapter, filled with warmth and love. And in return, they give you endless affection and comforting purrs.

It’s not my first time at the shelter, but I hope with all my heart it will be my last....

I’ve been here for almost five months now and have met many kind people along the way. They’ve said sweet things about me, offered gentle pets and treats, but in the end, they chose another cat they felt a stronger connection with. While I’m doing my best to stay hopeful, it hasn’t been easy.

Most days, you’ll find me perched on my cat tree by the window, watching the world go by and waiting for my turn to go home. Days quietly turned into weeks, and then into months. Still, I believe the right person is out there, someone who will feel that special spark with me.

Through it all, my sweet spirit has stayed strong. I’m a gentle, mellow guy with a big heart. I adore people and will lean into pets, curl up in your lap, and follow you around for attention. If you have treats, I might even stand up on my back legs just to make you smile.

When I’m not napping by the window and enjoying some quiet time, I love to play with my favorite toys, the rainbow wand and the laser pointer.

What I want more than anything is to spend Christmas in a warm, loving home. I’d prefer to be your one and only cat. I’ve waited a long time to be someone’s everything. And I know that when I finally get to go home, it will have been worth the wait.

Do you love cats, storytelling, and creating short videos that make people smile?

We’re looking for a volunteer who can bring our cats’ personalities to life through 15-second to 1-minute reels for our social media (and a few for our website). This flexible role lets you spend time with our cats and kittens, help them shine, and make a real difference for the cats waiting for their forever homes.

What this volunteer role includes:
✨ Creating fun, personality-filled reels
✨ Coming in at least once a week to gather content
✨ Using basic video editing skills to highlight each cat’s unique charm
✨ Helping us reach more potential adopters
✨ Being comfortable working closely with cats
✨ Returning completed reels in a timely manner and creating others as needed

Requirements:
🐾 Must be 18+
🐾 Familiar with current reel trends
🐾 Able to commit weekly hours (role is very flexible)

It means you can walk into our beautiful facility and enter any of our 13 separate cat rooms, where cats and kittens are socialized together and are free to climb, jump, play and purr to their hearts content. The cats even have outdoor “catios” to watch birds and sleep in the sun.
