Blanketing season is back and so is the question every horse owner debates every October: to blanket or not to blanket? 🐴

Here's what the research actually says. Horses that are blanketed regularly may not develop as thick a natural winter coat because the added warmth signals the body that insulation is less necessary. That means a blanketed horse becomes more dependent on the blanket as winter progresses, not less.

This isn't an argument against blanketing. Clipped horses, senior horses, underweight horses, and horses in wet climates often genuinely need it. But it is an argument for being consistent once you start.

The bigger nutritional connection: horses that are cold burn significantly more calories just to maintain body temperature. Whether you blanket or not, make sure your feed program accounts for the increased energy demand that comes with colder weather. 🙌

October checklist for horse owners heading into cold weather. 👇

✅ Body condition score every horse now, while there's still time to adjust before winter
✅ Check your hay supply and quality, not just quantity. Hay cut late in the season can be lower in digestible energy than you'd expect
✅ Senior horses and hard keepers need extra attention right now. They lose condition faster in cold and regain it slower

The transition from fall to winter is one of the most important nutrition windows of the year. 🐴

This is what fall is really about. 🍂🤍

A gentle giant, a growing family, and a golden October afternoon that nobody wanted to end. Dogs have this incredible way of making every season feel a little more special just by being in it. 🐾

10/23/2026

Treat time is also bonding time. 🐱🧡

Did you know that hand feeding your pet occasionally can actually strengthen your bond and build trust, especially with cats who are more reserved?

It also gives you a chance to notice changes in appetite, which can be an early indicator that something is off health wise. 🐾

Fall is officially in the air and your flock can feel it. 🐓🍂

Shorter days and cooler temps change what your chickens need from their feed, and October is the month a lot of backyard keepers start noticing the difference in egg production without knowing exactly why.

If you haven't thought about your flock's fall and winter feed program yet, now is a great time to start. 🙌

A Look Back at Compassion Veterinary Clinic – Nearly 20 Years Ago!

Sharing a memorable episode of Animal Cops Philadelphia, filmed nearly two decades ago, featuring Dr. Ravi Murarka and his dedication to rescuing and treating animals in need.

This heartbreaking case of a severely flea-infested and weakened dog reminds us of the importance of animal rescue, responsible pet ownership, and compassionate veterinary care.

From helping neglected and abused animals in Philadelphia nearly 20 years ago to volunteering with Mission Rabies in India, my passion for animal welfare, disease prevention, and saving lives continues.

At Compassion Veterinary Clinic, our mission remains unchanged: Compassion, Care, and Dedication to Every Animal.

We invite you to watch and share this special chapter of our veterinary journey. Together, we can continue raising awareness and making a difference, one animal at a time.

Autumn was made for dogs and they know it. 🍂🐾

Crisp air, crunchy leaves, and a pup who is absolutely living their best life. Fall walks are genuinely one of the best things about having a dog. They make you get outside even when you'd rather stay in and for that we are eternally grateful. 🧡

What's your favorite thing about fall walks with your dog?
