We had an amazing time hosting a wet lab for the talented veterinary students from The Ohio State University (OSU) at Dreams on Horseback! This hands-on workshop was a unique opportunity to share our knowledge and passion for equine care while helping students understand the art of conducting a lameness exam, honing their diagnostic skills, and learning treatment techniques from experienced professionals.

Bella Vista Equine’s doctors and staff had a fantastic time guiding the students through real-world scenarios, offering valuable insight into the nuances of equine veterinary care. And what made this day even more special? It was a chance to give back to Dreams on Horseback, an inspiring non-profit organization that provides equine-assisted therapies and activities to people of all ages.

Together with their incredible staff and equine team, we were able to create a hands-on learning environment that not only helped shape the next generation of equine veterinarians but also supported the important work that Dreams on Horseback is doing in the community.

A huge thank you to OSU, Dreams on Horseback, and everyone who made this event possible! We’re excited to continue fostering the growth of future equine professionals and strengthening our community bonds.

Here’s to many more opportunities to learn, grow, and give back! 💙

‼️Even if your horses are retired or don’t leave the property, they can still be exposed to diseases and should be vaccinated!

➡️Eastern Equine Encephalitis, Western Equine Encephalitis and West Nile Virus can all be spread by mosquitoes 🦟🦟

➡️Rabies can be transmitted by wild animals 🦝🐾

➡️Tetanus can be contracted through spores in soil and manure and can enter the body through wounds 🚫

Happy Foal Friday!

Did you know that foals are born with a naive immune system? Meaning their immune system is not fully developed, and therefore they are very susceptible to developing illness. In order to develop a strong immune system, foals need to consume colostrum, or first milk, from the dam. The colostrum contains antibodies that the foal needs to establish an adequate immune system. This is termed passive transfer of immunity. We test for adequate levels of transfer through a stall side SNAP test. This test measures a specific antibody in the foal’s bloodstream called IgG. If the foal does not have adequate levels IgG, we can intervene by providing more antibodies in the form of tubed colostrum or IV administration of equine plasma depending on how old the foal is at the time of evaluation.
Pictured here is a nice strong blue dot on a snap test!

Spring is coming! Dont forget to ask for a sheath cleaning while your horse is already sedate for their dental!! Beans (acumulation of dead cells and oils in the urethral fossa) can get big enough that they begin to obstruct urination.
