💲Let's talk budgeting.💲

First and foremost, Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter is not going anywhere.

It has been an absolute privilege to serve the people and animals of this community for the past 18 years. We hope to continue partnering with the City of Billings for many years to come.

Right now, YVAS does not have a contract with the City to provide animal sheltering services. Although negotiations are ongoing, our commitment to this community remains unchanged.

Since the City reopened its animal shelter at the former Monad facility, two significant gaps have remained:

📍The City is not currently providing services to reunite lost animals with their families.
📍The City facility is not accepting stray animals directly from members of the public.

So, where are people supposed to turn? Naturally, they continue coming to YVAS.

We are grateful that our community trusts us to help. We have continued accepting stray animals, providing veterinary care, searching for their families, and meeting their needs during the required 72-hour stray hold.

However, there is a difference between YVAS surviving without a City contract and YVAS continuing to provide the City’s animal sheltering services without reimbursement.

Every day we provide these services without a contract, the cost is being covered by our donors, grantors, veterinary clients, adopters, and supporters.

YVAS requested $550,000 to continue providing animal sheltering services on behalf of the City. This is an increase from the previous contract of approximately $360,000.

Why the increase?

YVAS no longer operates from a City-owned facility. We now pay commercial rent and utilities while also providing significantly more veterinary care to stray animals than we did when the original agreement was established.

Our request represents approximately 0.12% of the City’s proposed $457 million annual budget. For YVAS, however, the City contract represents approximately 34% of our annual operating budget.

YVAS is an independent nonprofit, not a City department. The contract reimburses us for specific municipal responsibilities, including:

🐾 Housing and caring for stray animals
🐾 Providing care during the legal stray hold
🐾 Reuniting lost pets with their families
🐾 Providing timely veterinary care

For the past month, we have continued offering these services without reimbursement because the animals still need somewhere safe to go.

Our commitment to animal welfare has not changed, but relying on charitable donations to fund a municipal responsibility is not a sustainable long-term solution.

We remain committed to working toward a fair and lasting agreement with the City. In the meantime, we are asking for your support to help us continue providing the compassionate care our community expects, and every stray animal deserves.

The Animal Hospital of Billings is excited to share our clinic is getting an upgrade! In order to train our staff and switch our systems, We will be CLOSED Monday, June 29th. We will resume normal business hours Tuesday, June 30th.

As part of this change, our previous online booking tool, the Pet Desk App, and the Pet Desk Rewards program will no longer be available. GOOD NEWS around the corner though! Our new online booking tool will give you better more specific access to scheduling and will be functional by the end of June. Our new App will be available by the fall and you’ll be able to access your records and TEXT our clinic right from your phone, request appointments and prescriptions and more right from your smart phone! We are so excited to bring you an improved experience and more streamlined care!
