We are frequently asked the question, what is the difference between Nexgard and Nexgard Plus?
Nexgard was one of the first chewable flea and tick preventatives, introduced to actively kill fleas and ticks as soon as they bite your dog, helping to prevent the spread of tick-borne diseases like Lyme Disease. Nexgard does not protect dogs from heartworm disease and is frequently paired with a heartworm preventative like Heartgard Plus that protects them from heartworm, as well as certain intestinal parasites.
Nexgard Plus is one of the newer all-in-one preventatives, designed to kill fleas and ticks, while also protecting dogs from heartworm and some intestinal parasites in one chewable treat.
If you're wondering which is better for your dog, it comes down to preference as both effectively protect your dog. Nexgard Plus provides a convenient one and done monthly solution, while others continue with the tried and true combination of Nexgard and Heartgard Plus. The American Heartworm Society released their Heartworm Incidence map for 2025. This incidence map shows the widespread cases of Heartworm in the US. A disease that can be fatal to dogs, it is spread via mosquitoes that feed on infected canines later infecting new canines, when they feed again. Thankfully, there are several preventatives that can protect your pet and limit the spread of the disease. If your dog is not currently on a Heartworm preventative, we recommend scheduling a visit to test them, so they can get started and be protected!
