Here at Stonewall Canine we work with a lot of rescue dogs.
Here is something that is incredibly important to keep in mind when adopting from rescues that take dogs from the south.
Right now there are only a few cases of this, all in southern states but with the high traffic and movement of southern rescue dogs to New England, this could very well become a very large problem for us up here. This is not like a regular fly larvae that only ingest and eats decaying tissue, screw worm larvae eat the flesh of living animals- small pricks, pokes, tears in the skin, or bites become a welcome invitation to the New World screwworm.
Please be diligent in where and whom you are adopting from. When adopting from facilities in the state of Massachusetts dogs have to be quarantined for 48 hours prior to adoption, this allows for things like this to be caught and deal dealt with prior to adoption.
Adopting dogs from shelters that do not have proper quarantine facilities will make this problem massively worse.
