HI FRIENDS 🩷🐶

My name is Courtney! Whether you're a dog trainer, client, dog owner, or just someone who loves watching dog videos → I'm so happy you're here! If you want to talk dogs, my DM's are always open 💌

I've been a dog lover my entire life. I've been a dog trainer for 16 years. I've run multiple successful businesses; I've handled and certified bed bug detection K9's; I've competed in canine nosework and akc competition obedience; I've mentored dozens of trainers and dog walkers; I've trained hundreds of dogs and owners; I've run classes, seminars, and pack-walks; I've made online dog training courses; and I've made hundreds of videos for dog-lovers! Dogs are my passion!

I currently offer Board & Train; Day-Training; One-On-One Problem-Solving Sessions; and Structured Boarding. My husband and I just bought a house in Palmer Massachusetts! As of September 1st we will be moving over to Palmer.

To all of my clients and dog trainer friends, THANK YOU. I absolutely love this community 🫶 and I'm so lucky to be apart of it.

Inspired by Morgan Lock because if we can do it with a group of dogs, you can do it with your dog!

This isn't luck. It isn't 4 dogs who are naturally good on the leash. It isn't 4 dogs with no behavioral issues. It's 4 dogs who have been trained to walk nicely on-leash.

Reactive Kado & Luna are with me for structured boarding for the weekend.

Kado will charge towards, lunge at, and bark at other dogs on walks. He is a big dog with a bigger bark. His housemate Luna will join in the barking.

Even though Kado and Luna are just boarding with me (not a Board & Train), I am working them to overcome their biggest obstacles. Why? Because they will be less stressed, less anxious, and less difficult to manage. I want both the boarding dogs and I to enjoy walks! I want the owners to have peace of mind that their dog is having a good time. Not just play, fun, and cookies. A home away from home that improves their dogs state of mind.

When Kado and Luna go home, they will most likely revert back to their old ways. True behavior change not only takes time and repetition, but it takes owner knowledge. Owners need to be taught how to communicate more effectively with their dog. That is why Board & Train comes with tools and a 2 hour go-home session.

Luna is here for structured boarding!

Her owners said she is generally well behaved, social with dogs, but she does join in with her housemate when he is barking and lunging at other dogs. She also pulls on the leash!

I'm working with Luna and her housemate Kado separately, and then eventually together!

Dog owners are being told to avoid things that make their dog uncomfortable. They're being told a quick fix is abuse.

If you went to therapy and they said, "you're right, going out into public is too hard, you should stay home more. Only go out in the very early mornings or very late at night when no one else is out." You would forever be hiding from, and managing your issues.

If your dog trainer says, "you're right, your dog barking out the windows is an extreme challenge. Just cover your windows so your dog cannot see outside anymore." You will be forever hiding from, and managing your dogs issues.

If your dog is reactive, the way to solve the problem is by confronting your dogs triggers, and giving your dog clear yes / no communication based on the choices they make. It can be a quick fix, and it can be very simple.

One-on-one lesson with reactive Scout!

Reactive dogs benefit most from this order of operations: foundation work in low distractions environments using all four quadrants of operant conditioning; confronting their trigger in a controlled way to correct the dog and put them into avoidance; build confidence around their trigger in a controlled way; encounter their trigger in the wild.

These steps do not take months or years. In this video we worked around my dog Cowboy who is a neutral dog (confronting the reactivity in a controlled way), then we worked around a dog park (semi-controlled, as we can do many reps over and over with the same dogs, and we can create as much distance as we need for success).

Scouts owner has done great foundation work with Scout using the best tools (E-Collar Technologies / herm sprenger prong / positive reinforcement). Now we are challenging that work and addressing his reactivity!

One-on-one session success!

Declan is a pup who pulls so much that his female owner cannot walk him! His male owner gets dragged all over the neighborhood.

So how did we fix this? We switched his tools from a front hooking harness and cookies, to a Herm Sprenger prong. Declan was inclined to pull on the prong as well, but with some new handling techniques his owner have figured out how to USE the prong to stop him from pulling.

Next step is exposure to his biggest distraction - other dogs!

OUT is literally one of my favorite commands.

It's so easy to teach and it allows me to move dogs without having to use any leash pressure or get in their personal space bubble.

For the first session with a food motivated dog I like to practice "out" with their food bowl.

As the dog is eating I pair the word "out" with stim on the e-collar. I start at a low number, and dial up until the dog removes themselves from the food bowl. Then I usually work at the number I dialed up to.

I practice walking around the food bowl with the dog because I don't want the dog going back to the food bowl until I tell them "break."

I do not have to put my hands in the bowl or do anything invasive, which allows me to work through possible resource guarding while staying safe (Scout does not resource guard from humans).

After a couple of sessions with the food bowl I usually move to working on "out" in other contexts. After 1-2 sessions the dogs usually understand and I can stop drilling "out" during mealtime.

You don't have to tolerate nipping from an adult dog!

Not during times of excitement, not during play, not during nail trimming, not during petting, not when you're attempting to put tools on your dog, not ever.

🚩 Red flag if you allow your dog to use their mouth to tell you to back off (like during grooming, or putting tools on them).

🚩 Red flag if your dog puts their teeth on you when they get really worked up.

🚩 Red flag if your dog focuses on nipping your hands during play, or launches themselves at the toy in your hand with no hesitation.

Scout (who can be mouthy when excited 😂) stayed with me over the weekend so I could assess his reactivity and overall behavior.

We are moving forward with private lessons. My decision was based on his ability to follow through with new commands so quickly. Once I set a boundary, he would instantly respect it. Also his owners are already very knowledgeable.

I took some footage of his reactivity towards my dogs [which I will share], and he definitely went after them → I wouldn't consider him safe around random other dogs. Though I know that with some solid yes/no information from his owners we can fix his reactivity, and put this guy into pack-drive on walks.

More to come with Scout!
