Please extend a warm Wood River welcome to Dr. Liz Krueger, who will be joining the Sawtooth Equine team September 7–19 while Dr. Roos is away celebrating her wedding and honeymoon!

Dr. Krueger is happiest when she’s helping her equine patients feel their best, with a particular love for all things wellness. Her can-do attitude, approachable style, and infectious personality make her a wonderful fit for the Sawtooth team. We’re looking forward to having her back in the Wood River Valley.

And because every great visiting vet deserves an equally personable sidekick, Dr. Krueger will be joined by Stevie, her four-legged companion and unofficial welcoming committee.

Could your horse’s spine be affecting their comfort or performance?

Back or neck discomfort can present in many ways, from stiffness and reduced performance to behavioral changes or neurologic abnormalities. Identifying the source often requires a thorough examination and targeted diagnostic imaging.

Throughout September 2026, horses undergoing an axial skeletal radiograph series will receive a complimentary radiology consultation of a $165 value.

A board-certified veterinary radiologist will provide an expert review of the images and work alongside your veterinarian to support accurate interpretation, diagnosis, and next-step recommendations. This additional insight may be especially valuable for horses with suspected cervical arthritis, kissing spines, or neurologic concerns.

Our experienced veterinarians can help determine whether spinal radiographs are appropriate for your horse and develop a diagnostic plan based on their individual needs.

Pigeon fever is caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, which can survive in contaminated soil for months.

The disease is commonly spread when an abscess drains and releases bacteria into the surrounding environment. Flies can pick up the bacteria from infected drainage and carry it to another horse. It may also spread through contaminated stalls, bedding, equipment, grooming supplies or direct contact with an affected horse.

The bacteria enter through small cuts, wounds, insect bites or mucous membranes. This is why isolating affected horses, containing all drainage, cleaning contaminated areas and maintaining good fly control are so important.

If your horse develops an unusual swelling, draining abscess, fever, decreased appetite, lethargy or significant limb edema, contact your veterinarian. Do not attempt to open or drain the area yourself.

Not every horse with a cough has an infection and subtle respiratory inflammation can affect comfort and performance long before the signs become obvious.

A bronchoalveolar lavage, or BAL, allows our veterinarians to evaluate what is happening deep within your horse’s lungs. During the procedure, a small amount of sterile fluid is introduced into the lower airways and collected for microscopic analysis.

The types and numbers of cells found in the sample help us identify and characterize inflammation associated with conditions such as equine asthma or Exercise-Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage (EIPH). This information allows us to develop a more targeted plan that may include medication, environmental changes, or both, because effective treatment starts with understanding the cause.

Smoke, dust, allergens, travel, and changing air quality can all challenge your horse’s respiratory system. If your horse has been coughing, showing nasal discharge, tiring sooner than usual, or experiencing an unexplained decline in performance, our veterinarians can help determine the next step.
