With Halloween tomorrow, let’s clear up one spooky little mystery: wolf teeth don’t mean your horse may be a werewolf.

Wolf teeth are small teeth that some horses develop just in front of their cheek teeth. Despite the fierce name, they aren’t fangs!

Do they need to come out? Not always. Your veterinarian can assess their position and whether they may contribute to discomfort, including problems associated with the bit.

Osphos (clodronate disodium) is listed as currently in shortage by the FDA Animal Drug Shortages Database, with the shortage attributed to manufacturing delays. There is no information as to when Osphos will again be available. Consult your equine veterinarian to discuss what alternatives are available to your horse if you are currently treating with Osphos.

🦷 A quick peek doesn’t tell the whole tooth!

There’s a lot going on in the back of your horse’s mouthand a brief look can miss problems hiding there.

A sedated oral exam allows your veterinarian to use a speculum, light, and other tools to thoroughly evaluate the teeth, gums, and other tissues for issues such as fractures, infection, and painful sores.

Equine dentistry is about more than floating. It’s about finding problems and choosing the right care for your horse. If your horse is due for a dental exam, call our office to schedule!

Dr. Nysether has hit the ground running at Sawtooth Equine Service seeing horses throughout the Wood River Valley for fall wellness and lameness appointments, and jumping right in on emergencies!

A Washington native and lifelong horse lover, she earned her Animal Science degree at Washington State University. Her path took her to Kentucky Equine Research and work as an equine veterinary assistant before veterinary school at the University of Arizona and an equine internship in California.

Some of you already met Dr. Inga at our Keys to Winter Success seminar, where she helped horse owners tackle body condition, nutrition, and hydration for the colder months.

We’re happy to have her on the Sawtooth team. Please help us give her a warm Wood River Valley welcome!
