In Loving Memory of Steve Farkos 💙💛
It is difficult to find the words to honor someone who meant so much to so many.
Winsom Farm was more than a farm to Steve. It was a place built from his love of horses, his passion for the sport, and, most importantly, his desire to share that passion with others. What began as a family’s love for horses grew into a community - and eventually, a family far larger than he probably ever imagined.
For countless riders, Steve was more than a trainer or coach. He was a teacher, mentor, cheerleader, storyteller, and friend. He had a way of seeing potential in people before they could see it in themselves. He challenged his riders to work harder, think deeper, ride better, and believe they were capable of more. Sometimes that meant hearing “half halt sooner,” sometimes it meant being pushed outside of your comfort zone, and sometimes it simply meant having Steve there reminding you that you could do it.
Generations of riders grew up at Winsom under his watchful eye. They learned to ride, fell off, got back on, cleaned stalls, prepared for horse shows, celebrated victories, worked through disappointments, and spent countless hours talking about horses and life. Some went on to become trainers and professionals themselves. Others simply carried those lessons with them into the rest of their lives. Every one of them carries a little piece of Steve’s legacy.
And perhaps that is what makes what Steve created so special. His impact cannot be measured by ribbons, competitions, horses trained, or years spent coaching. It can be seen in the people who still proudly wear blue and yellow. It is in the riders who hear his advice in their heads as they enter the ring. It is in the friendships and families formed within these barn walls. It is in every person who learned to love horses a little more deeply because Steve was willing to share his knowledge, his horses, his farm, and his passion with them.
Steve taught so many people how to ride - but his greatest lessons reached far beyond horses. He taught us to keep trying. To expect more from ourselves. To laugh along the way. To get back on when things did not go as planned. And, above all, to believe we might just be capable of jumping the moon if we were willing to try.
Winsom Farm will forever carry his fingerprints. His vision built this place, but the people he impacted are what will carry his legacy forward.
To everyone who has shared a story, photograph, memory, or kind word over the past few days: thank you. Seeing just how many lives Steve touched has been an incredible reminder of the community he created. Our hearts are especially with the Farkos family as they mourn a beloved father, grandfather, family member, coach, and friend.
There will never be another Steve, but there will always be pieces of him here - in the horses, in the lessons, in the stories we tell, and in all of us who were fortunate enough to be part of the Winsom Farm family.
Rest easy, Steve. Thank you for believing in so many of us, for sharing the thing you loved most, and for creating a place so many people were lucky enough to call home.
Your legacy will ride on. 💙💛
