We’re celebrating two birthdays at Relic Cane Corso today and each deserves their own post.
Today is Deus’ 8th birthday. Deus is my everything, absolute heart dog. To know him is to love him. Deus was my first import and I was so nervous about how a puppy would handle the long trip from Serbia. We picked him up late at night at the Atlanta airport and I still remember when we opened the crate and the cutest little black brindle puppy came walking out of the crate wiggling from head to toe. He didn’t skip a beat, it’s like he’d known me his whole life. I quickly noticed he wasn’t a typical puppy. He had an old soul, never went through the crazy puppy stages. Always calm and reserved and loved everyone and everything. He never was one for licking or jumping and just so good. I decided early on I wanted to do therapy work with him. Who knew how much therapy he would bring to me. I’m not overly outgoing but having him made me want to get out and do more. As soon as he was old enough, we tested him to be a therapy dog and he passed with flying colors. I’ve never seen a dog bring people so much joy, he just seems to know what everyone needs.
He was also my first show dog. I had been in Corsi for several years and always wanted to show my dogs but couldn’t bring myself to get out there and do it. Just the fear of trying something new that I’ve never done. But man was he the perfect partner. Absolutely stunning and so sure of himself, he gave me the confidence that I could follow my dreams. I will never forget the first time he and I stepped in the ring together. First time either of us had been in the ring and he took winners dog at 6 months old. I was hooked! I was able to get all of his champion points myself except the last stinking point! I needed one point and Deus decided I was boring. 😂😂😂. If you knew Deus you also know he’s a diva and when he’s over it, he’s over it. So I called in the help of my good friend Hope Beauford and she got his final point to finish his championship. Deus loves Hope and would just come to life with her in the ring. His next show partner was Cindy N Stroupe and man does he love him some Cindy. The two of them accomplished great things together and still have a lifelong bond.
These days he’s retired from showing but he’s still doing his therapy work and is a staple in the community. Everyone that hangs out downtown knows and loves Deus. He’s always up for being loved on by any and everyone. He’s produced some amazing dogs that are out there making other families as happy as he’s made me and several of his offspring are in my breeding program continuing to pass on his amazing qualities. His puppies have his awesome temperament, quirky fun personality and that big ol head 😂😂😂😂.
Happy 8th birthday to my bestie, so grateful he came into my life when he did. I wouldn’t be the breeder I am or probably even be showing dogs without him.
